BUFFALO'S MOST FAMOUS FAMILY FIRM?

Rich, Jacobs, Larkin; which namesake claims the most famous family firm in Buffalo? The Larkin Company, founded by John D. Larkin, maintained operations for nearly one hundred years and multiple generations of leadership. An unassuming soap company blossomed into a major worldwide mail-order, manufacturing and retail operation bringing in sales of over $300,000,000 in today's figures.

The family and leadership intermingled and included many of the most influential Buffalonian's of the time. Elbert Hubbard led the marketing efforts with breakthrough methods. Darwin Martin started from the bottom, schlepping soap on the streets and later rose to be the corporate secretary of the company. Martin also initiated the Larkin and Frank Lloyd partnership; creating the famed Larkin Administration Building.

In the October issue of Buffalo Spree, Philip Nyhuis took a look back at the Larkin Company and the famed family that rose and fell with the business empire. Grab your copy to dig further into the Larkins and discover the Larkin Gallery that resides within the Larkin Center of Commerce.

ECKL'S TAKES PRIDE IN SERVING A BUFFALO FAVORITE

Buffalo Spree took a big bite out of Buffalo's very own Beef on' Weck this month, featuring some of our favorite spots to enjoy the local classic and some 'out of the bun' interpretations.

Buffalo Spree
The Beef on 'Weck timeline begins with the construction of the original Eckl's building, first owned by Wilhelm Willink. The Eckl family name came into play when Jack and Martha took over operations in 1934. Dale and Shirley physically moved the building to its long time Orchard Park home in 1964 where they operated the restaurant until health issues forced a brief shutdown of the local's haven. Jim Cornell soon purchased the OP business, bringing it back to life and creating a spectacular flagship operation in Larkinville.

Writer Jana Eisenberg had the opportunity tag along with Eckl's@Larkin team member, David Wahl to discover some of the secrets behind their version of the Buffalo favorite.

Dave emphasizes that everything begins with the consistency of the meat from their supplier. A simple salt and pepper seasoning is applied before going low and slow to accomplish the perfect rare finish. Once the top round roast is thinly sliced, to provide tender consistency, the beef is piled high on the house baked kummelweck roll and topped with horseradish made in-house.

Devon Dams-O'Connor knew there were alternative options to the classics out there. Amongst others, Eckl's Prime Rib-n-Weck Egg Rolls are truly "beyond the bun". Horseradish cream sauce accompanies the tender beef encased in a crispy, flaky exterior coated in salt and caraway. The best way to start an evening with Eckl's@Larkin!

LARKIN HISTORY FROM THE DESK OF SHARON OSGOOD
PEDERO GUERRERO, FAMOUS ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHER INTERSECTS WITH LARKIN

"My name is Pedro Guerrero. I'm a photographer." It was the first time this nervous young 22 year old had referred to himself as a photographer. And it was with great trepidation that he said this to the most famous architect in the United States, who clearly had not anticipated this visit despite Pedro having written to him for an appointment. Pedro's father had insisted that instead of lazing around their Mesa, Arizona home after Pedro had dropped out of art college, he go to Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright's (hereafter, FLW) winter home and studio in Arizona, and apply for a job. The year was 1939.

Pedro tells, in the introduction to his book, "Picturing Wright: An Album From FLW's Photographer," (Pomegranate, 1994), that he had known little about Wright, but there immediately ensued a comfortable rapport. He spread out his sparse portfolio on a drafting table. "My portfolio was a hodgepodge of school inspired still lifes of commercial products, food, fashions and an unnecessary number of nudes on a beach." (p. 13) Continue Reading.
