Feb. 10, 2020

The 2020 NAB Show is less than two months away. I was reminded of this when I registered for my exhibit hall pass this week. It made me realize why things are a bit quiet - everyone is busily prepping new toys to launch in a couple of months.

That doesn't mean there isn't news. Grass Valley announced this week that they were acquired by Black Dragon Ventura Capital. Belden, which owned Grass Valley, announced last fall that they were selling Grass Valley to "simplify" their portfolio. Black Dragon says it "plans to leverage Grass Valley's intellectual property and talent to drive innovation and lead the industry's migration to a software-based future." Black Dragon is led by Louis Hernandez, Jr., former CEO of Avid.

In other news, DPP announced the results of a survey of production companies looking at how they are integrating the Cloud into their production workflow. What has become clear is that the Cloud is now permeating production pretty prominently. (Uh, I couldn't resist.) You'll find the details here.

Thinking of other new stuff, one of the new features in Catalina is Sidecar. This allows you to use an iPad as a second monitor to your Mac. While 27" iMac users may not be overly impressed, folks trying to edit video on a laptop can certainly benefit from this. I have a tutorial on how to enable this feature this week.

The audience for TheInsideTips.com continues to grow. We now have readers in all 50 US states and 49 countries around the world. If you haven't subscribed, this is a great time to start. All subscriptions are free. Even better, you can contribute your own favorite tips. (We also allow you to track the number of people that read your tips, along with their rating.) These Tips continue to be fascinating to write and I always enjoy reading what others submit. Please sign up here!

In other tutorials this week, I have one on using keyframes in Final Cut Pro X along with a look at software you've owned forever and, probably, never used: the Digital Color Meter. You'll find links to all of these below.

That's it for this week. I always enjoy hearing from you. Until next week,   edit well .
