Feb. 18, 2019

As you may remember, the folks at mLogic sent me an LTO-8 tape drive to review, which I did recently. ( Here's the link.) But, having this drive put me into a mood to "Find My Stuff." So, this week, I have three articles that all revolve around finding and archiving our stuff.

Before I get to that, though, I have exciting news. After many requests, we've now posted weekly Buzz episodes to YouTube. We hadn't updated our Buzz YouTube channel since we stopped producing videos a couple of years ago. But, then we realized this was a mistake. So, we just finished posting shows from January, 2018, until last week to our YouTube Channel: Digital Production Buzz.

Plus, we added a very clever index to each video so you can listen to the entire show or just skip to the section you want to hear. We added extra information about each show to the descriptions below each. We'll be posting new shows every week to YouTube - as always, let me know what you think.

Thinking of The Buzz, last week's show was fun. We talked with Jonathan Toomey about how he decides what to program for the keynotes and on-the-trade-show-floor theaters at this year's NAB Show. Part of our NAB Insight segment, Jonathan is the Executive Producer for this year's NAB Show. Then, we talked about lighting, which seemed appropriate for an audio podcast. We spoke with the founders of LitePanels, DoP Choice and The Light Bridge about the latest lighting technology and techniques. This was an interesting show and you can listen to it here.

Something I learned as my library of tutorials got bigger is that it's hard for many readers to know what kind of resources are on my website. So, in the Articles section, I have two "Article Collections," which make it easy to learn more about a larger subject. One is on multicam editing and the other is on creating green-screen keys. Both cover Apple Final Cut and Adobe Premiere.

Now, back to the theme of finding the stuff I've lost. Recently, I discovered I have more than a million assets stored on my servers; and this doesn't include the seven RAIDs that are locally attached and not indexed. Sheesh, that's a lot!!

So, today, I have a blog on why it's so difficult to get excited about organizing our media - even though we all KNOW we need to do it. Then, I have two product reviews: one on Archiware's P5 archiving software and the other on Axle.ai's Axle ai 2018 media asset management software. Lots to learn this week.

As always, free to send me news or stories you think the rest of us would like to know. Chat with you next Monday. In the meantime, edit well.

Last Week on The Buzz
In this episode, "NAB Insight" highlights how the NAB Show programs their main stage keynotes and on-floor theaters.
Then, after casting light on the inner workings of the NAB Show, we look at lighting and lighting gear, including some new technology that harkens back to how the ancient Egyptians used light. Cool stuff!
