Sept. 7, 2020

It's Labor Day in the US, the official end of summer. It's also about 115° F outside as I write this. So the air conditioner is my new best friend right now. Let's start with the news.

Digital Rebellion posted a note from a reader that there may be a big memory leak in the latest version of Compressor (4.4.7). They report that, when creating a Blu-ray Disc, they either get a kernel panic or run out of memory. I haven't tested this myself, but I trust Digital Rebellion and want to give you a heads-up.

Also, with Compressor 4.4.7, another reader reports audio sync drift when converting 23.98 fps media to 25 fps. This was true in both Compressor 4.4.6 and 4.4.7. Apple is aware of this issue.

A reader also commented about color correction problems with the latest version of Final Cut Pro X. Colors flicker when correcting camera native files. The workaround is to color correct proxy files. There is no flicker when switching back to the native files. Scroll to the bottom of this article and read his comment.

Digital Anarchy just updated Transcriptive.com and Transcriptive. Transcriptive.com lets you transcribe, share and edit transcripts. Collaborate on creating a paper edit by sharing the transcript with your team and editor. Send transcripts or videos from Premiere to Transcriptive.com, then back to Premiere.

Red Giant announced the IBC edition of their 3D & Motion Design Show. 16 artists, 4 days covering Red Giant, Cinema 4D and Redshift products.

Quantum just published a white paper on "The 'Forever' Content Archive." The most valuable asset of media companies is digital content. Content producers and managers need to treat this data like the valuable asset it is. This white paper looks at the challenges of creating a long-term archive of media assets.

OWC launched the OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual with 3-port Hub. The Mercury Elite Pro Dual offers up to 32TB of storage capacity plus a built-in three-port high-power USB hub for accessory connectivity and device charging.

From now till Sept. 15 (next Wednesday) Peachpit is offering 45% OFF my book through their website. The Coupon code is LEARNING. The reviews are fantastic! All 5 stars! If you haven't purchased your copy, now is a great time to get a great book at a great price. (And, besides, you'll enjoy reading it!)

On another front, this week we will publish our 1,000 tip for The Inside Tips! Wow, that milestone came a lot faster than I was expecting. One thousand tips is a lot! If you haven't signed up yet, there are six different newsletters you can subscribe to. All free, with new Tip Letters released every week.

I have three new tutorials and a product review. The headline feature for the latest update of Final Cut Pro X is improvements in proxy workflow. My lead tutorial is an in-depth look at what's new and how it works. For some reason, editing with proxies has gotten a bad rap, which is unfortunate, because proxies can save you time and money.

Western Digital, through their G-Technology division, released ArmorLock, a highly-secure, portable, high-speed SSD specifically designed for media & entertainment. They sent me a unit to review and, while parts of it are amazing, there are some issues that still need work. Read my review here.

Other tutorials include new proxy options in Compressor, timeline marker secrets in Premiere Pro, and a repeat tutorial from last week on better ways to maintain your computer. This last article is one you need to bookmark - it can bail you out when your system starts having problems.

Webinars restart this Wednesday with a look at media management, file sizes and video formats. Easily half the questions I get revolve around problems with media. So, in these two sessions, I'll explain ways we can manage our media more successfully. Also, if you have questions, please email me and I'll gladly answer them on Wednesday.

Well, our strange year continues with heat hot enough to fry the brain, holidays where we can't travel, and an indie media industry in shambles. The pandemic continues, people are still getting sick and it is very hard to be cheerful. It's like a very long hike: We know we'll be glad to arrive but, for now, it's all we can do to put one foot in front of the other. Remember, people still need the skills we offer. Don't give up.

Stay healthy, stay safe and stay hopeful. Until next Monday, edit well.. Edit well
