Philippe emailed me a few weeks ago about how he backed up his data. This started me thinking about the process of creating backups, along with the new options for Cloud storage and the havoc that malware and ransomware are causing by corrupting data.

I haven't written about backups for a while, so I decided this week was the time. Then, as I was researching this article, I discovered new write-once technology that I'm likely to buy for myself to try out.

So, here's how I backup my files and the gear I use.

It's getting toward the end of the year, but something new is always happening.

This past weekend, I upgraded to macOS Tahoe (26.1). I did it overnight, so I didn't really time how long it took.

Since then, my system has worked fine, except I cannot get Mercury Transmit to display video to a second monitor in Premiere. Other than that, I discovered any problems.

The Mac has a well-deserved reputation for security. However, it is not invulnerable. Recently, I was provided a guest post on Mac security for remote teams.

Since then, I have not been able to verify the name or bio of this author, nor can I be sure it wasn't written using AI. However, the link is safe and the tips suggested seem reasonable to me, so I'm publishing this article.

Webinars return on Wednesday, Dec. 10 - with a look at the latest features in Adobe Premiere.

However, this won't fill the full hour. If you have other questions, please email me and I'll add them into the session. As always, registration is free.

Last week, after getting a request from a reader, I realized that my three Creative Bundles - Final Cut, Premiere and Resolve - are missing the closed caption files. So, last Friday, I added them to each bundle in the Store.

If you purchased one of these bundles in the last two months, or if you purchased either Webinar 389 or Webinar 336 for FCP, this link provides a free download of closed captions.

If you want to learn how to connect SRT-formatted closed captions to a media file on the Mac, this tutorial explains how.

(Short answer: QuickTime Player won't work, here's free software that will.)

These three tutorials all sprang from the same email: Bill asking how to display the Viewer full screen. After I answered him, I decided to create tutorials for all three software that I cover - only to discover that there was more to it than I thought!

Here are tutorials that cover both one and two monitor systems.

As I work more and more with closed captions, I realize that there are more and more places where they can be useful.

Not just for the hearing impaired, but for the rest of us.

Closed captions - especially if they've been proof-read at least a little - can solve problems with poor audio, strong accents, heavy background noise, or simply watching a video with the sound turned off.

The ability to change the size or color of captions - which is controlled by the user, not the creator - is extremely useful for folks that have weak eyes as well as weak ears.

And, for me, another advantage of a caption file is that I can open it in Text Edit, then search it to see if it has the information I need. Captions aren't as easy to read as a transcript, but they will do in a pinch.

As I was adding captions to these bundles, I was patting myself on the back for adding captions to all the videos in my Video Training Library. Then, I realized, I also need to add them to all the webinars in my store.

Sigh.... Now I know what my main project will be this coming week. Well, that and Wednesday's webinar. See you then.

Until next Monday, stay healthy, stay hopeful and edit well.
