Whew! What a week. We finally got our website moved to a faster server, but, in so doing, it took down my email for a day. It is difficult to appreciate how dependent we are on instant communication until it isn't there. But, now, it's back. If you sent me a message over the weekend and I didn't respond, please resend it.

As you probably know, I'm not a fan of AI. But, there's a big difference between generative AI and AI-based tools. Over the past few years, AI tools have quietly entered the creative workflow — not as a human replacement, but as their support. Here, in this guest article, are a variety of AI tools you may find useful.

TOP THREE NAB SHOW VIDEOS

Here are the Top 3 of our NAB Show interviews on YouTube:

December 2024

Webinars return starting May 22, with an in-depth look at "AI features in Final Cut Pro." (Coming in June are demos of AI features in Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve.) Apple, Adobe and Blackmagic Design have all told me that their goal in creating AI-assisted features is to enable the editor to do more. During these three sessions, we can see what they did.

I had a problem: My SSD was getting fuller the more files I deleted! This strange behavior took some trouble-shooting and, if you use SSDs, you need to know how to fix this.

One of the themes from multiple interviews at the NAB Show was "data repatriation."

Here, Sam Bogoch, CEO of Axle AI, explains what this is.

Last week, when I wrote about data repatriation, Philippe Neron compiled a table comparing cloud storage with on-premises storage. I found this so helpful, I asked his permission to reprint it here.

A panic email from a reader whose projects suddenly disappeared reminded me it was time for a tutorial on how to recover from disaster using backups.

So, I created two:

  • Apple Final Cut Pro
  • Adobe Premiere Pro

Another trouble-shooting problem for many starts when a user confuses memory with storage. These are not the same and you need to know the difference.

We are shooting more media than ever, distributing it in more ways than ever, and reusing our archives in ways we never used before. The only way to keep track of it all is using a media asset manager (MAM). There are a few dozen to choose from, so I asked Sam Bogoch what questions we should ask in choosing a MAM for ourselves.

IN CLOSING

Starting this week, we are experimenting with new formats for this newsletter. These will probably evolve over the next few weeks as we see what works and what doesn't. (It's a definite work-in-process.) Your comments are always welcome.

Thinking of comments, I am also interested in what we can provide that would be useful or valuable to you. We are reexamining our webinars, tutorials, news coverage, and overall visual look. Our goal is to continue to make what we create more accessible and helpful. Over the next month we also hope to begin upgrading our website.

This is all part of providing you the tools you need to improve your skills, discover new technology and continue to succeed in this tumultuous world. As always, let me know your thoughts.

Until next Monday, stay healthy, stay hopeful and edit well.
