I've scheduled four new webinars between now and the end of the year. One on each of the key software titles I write about - Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and Premiere Pro. Plus, a year-end wrap-up with "Ask Larry Anything!" As always, registration is free. The first one - on Final Cut - is NEXT week.

I first wrote this storage bandwidth tutorial back in 2008, then updated it every few years since. Recently, storage has exploded in speed and capacity, so this week I significantly revised and extended this. It's one of my most popular articles.

One of the key new features in Adobe Premiere is the Properties panel. It's less a new feature and more of an interface refinement. But, the key benefit is that it will save you time.

A question I got a few weeks ago, asked me to explain audio normalization and show where it would be useful. I finally had the time to create a tutorial that illustrates this. The good news is that every NLE supports this feature.

Computer system performance is a squishy topic. Every M-series Mac is fast enough to edit video: HD, 4K, 6K, 8K and, more often than not, even 12K. Editing isn't a problem anymore. Where system performance does matter is in the periphery: file transfers, renders, exports and multicam editing.
Even then, the gating factor on performance isn't our computer, but the speed and capacity of our storage. In the past, internal drives on Macs were twice as fast as Thunderbolt 3/4. With the release of Thunderbolt 5, external storage should be as fast as internal storage; which is just amazing.
If you are trying to decide where to spend your money, look to buy a mid-range computer system, then take the money you save and buy fast external storage. We are in the very earliest days of Thunderbolt 5 storage. I expect the flood-gates to open after the first of the year.
Two final thoughts: 1. No HDD RAID will be fast enough to fill a Thunderbolt 5 pipe. (It would take more than 30 HDD drives to do so.) 2. No current NLE edits, renders, or exports fast enough to fully fill a Thunderbolt 3/4 pipe, much less Thunderbolt 5. So "faster" is good enough - you don't need to find the "fastest."
Until next Monday, stay healthy, stay hopeful and edit well.
