Last week I edited the remaining two dozen NAB Show New York interviews. What a range of conversations!

While NAB showcases what's new, there's so much ELSE going on in media today that I didn't want to create an endless series of "What's new and how much does it cost?" interviews. So, while I asked guests whether they had anything new - about a third did - I wanted these interviews to do more than suggest where we should spend our money.

I wanted to learn their perspectives on the current impact of AI? What larger market trends were they watching? With the industry in such turmoil, what were signs of hope? What do we, as media creators, need to know?

Here are three interviews I found especially interesting:

Link: Matt Cavanagh on the challenges in our industry and reasons for optimism

Link: Colin Rocker on what it takes to be a social media influencer

Then, something else I haven't done for a long time, I interviewed the CEOs of two of the largest PR agencies that focus on media - Bubble Agency and Grithaus Agency - to find out whether all companies need a PR agency (both said "No"), mistakes companies make when working with a PR agency, and what we can do to improve our PR even if we do it ourselves. Both CEOs were fascinating.

I'm gratified by your support of my DaVinci Resolve training. Remember, you can purchase any of the three titles for 25% off for a while longer. Still to come is a detailed presentation on the Color page. However, I'm narrating another audio book and doing some super-cuts to my NAB interviews, so the Color page webinar is still a few weeks away.

At the NAB Show New York, I recorded 31 interviews:

  • Seven think pieces with industry leaders
  • Two discussions with PR agency CEOs
  • Twenty-two in-depth conversations with companies creating products for media creators like us

Every single interview has valuable insight on what's happening in media, how tools are evolving and what we can do to stay afloat. Pick a few companies you like - or want to learn more about - and give them a listen.

Not sure where to go first? Here are the Top 10 interviews:

Trade shows remind me that in spite of all the turmoil - and there is a LOT! - many things remain the same: Our love for telling stories. Our fascination with technology. The irresistible call of "what's new." And renewing contacts with friends and associates. While traditional media - like broadcast - continues to hollow-out, new markets - like social media - are exploding. While enterprises and studios still rule for high-budget entertainment, major league sports and extravagant events, well-paying, challenging jobs are emerging in corporate, social media and independent documentaries of all kinds. What hasn't stabilized is financing.

The world is changing. In 1940, Thomas Wolfe wrote "You can't go home again." While true that we can't go back to the past, it is also true that the future is not without hope. New opportunities exist for all of us - not just the rich and famous - to tell our stories and reach a worldwide audience. Distribution may be under attack, but storytellers have never had so many opportunities. A good idea is just as valuable today as ever - and far more likely to find its way to an audience.

The NAB Show reminded me that the world of media is far larger than we imagine, and extends far beyond the confines of broadcast transmitters. The world is a large place - what we need now is the courage to explore it.

Until next Monday, stay healthy, stay safe and edit well.
