Larry King to host Robert Spitzer and Stephen Hawking
Leading authority on metaphysics to respond to Hawking's creation theory on CNN Friday night
IRVINE, Calif., Sept. 9 -- It's on! The Larry King stage is set for what may shape up to be one of the most provocative discussions on the need for a Creator in physics. Stephen Hawking's latest controversial work The Grand Design -- "no God required" -- has drawn vigorous retort from the religious community. One prominent philosopher and metaphysical expert, Robert Spitzer, S.J., Ph.D., made a strong rebuttal to Hawking's claim. On Friday, September 10, King will host both Hawking and Spitzer as they defend their opposing viewpoints.

Robert J. Spitzer, S.J., Ph.D., President of the Magis Center of Reason and Faith, immediate past president of Gonzaga University and author of the recently published New Proofs for the Existence of God: Contributions of Contemporary Physics and Philosophy quickly responded to Hawking with a reply entitled "The Curious Metaphysics of Dr. Stephen Hawking." An expert in metaphysics and the ontology of physics, Spitzer has published extensively on the relationship of these two disciplines and the philosophy of God. Spitzer is currently producing a documentary on God and Modern Physics which is scheduled for completion in November. It features eight esteemed physicists who present an astrophysical response to atheism. An accomplished academic in his own right, Spitzer holds four advanced degrees: Ph.D. Philosophy, CUA, Th.M.; Weston School, Cambridge; M.Div. Gregorian University, Rome; M.A., Philosophy St. Louis University.

Hawking is a theoretical physicist who gained widespread attention from his book A Brief History of Time, along with several subsequent works, including his latest and hotly debated The Grand Design. In the recent book, Hawking argues against the need for a creator or God. Hawking's assertion has sparked widespread dismay and represents a disconnect from his earlier works which were open to the possibility of a creator. In 2005, Hawking published God Created
the Integers: The Mathematical Breakthroughs that Changed History. Hawking recently retired from his post as a professor of mathematics at the University of Cambridge, a position he held for 30 years.

Be sure to watch the grand discussion on Grand Design, scheduled to air on CNN's Larry King Show, Friday at 9pm EDT. Updates will be announced as they are made available. To learn more, visit
A special appeal from Fr. Spitzer

In view of Stephen Hawking's recent book and the fallout it is likely to create, intensifying the Magis Center of Reason and Faith mission is critical. Dr. Hawking has the greatest influence of any modern scientist in our popular culture. Unfortunately, he has written a book that is highly unsubstantiated, but that could have an extremely harmful impact upon our society -- particularly our young people.

Providentially, the Magis Center was founded one year ago with the specific mission of exploring and sharing the close connection between reason and faith as revealed by new discoveries in physics and philosophy. We are in the final stages of production on a documentary titled "In the Beginning" that directly addresses the questions raised by Dr. Hawking in his book. "In the Beginning" features eight esteemed physicists, including Nobel Prize Laureate Arno Penzias, who discovered the background radiation from the Big Bang. Our documentary will provide an effective scientific counterpoint to Dr. Hawking's specious arguments. This film is needed in your community, and we would like to provide it.

We must also expand our already highly-successful new media outreach. In addition to online question and answer forums, we have videocasts and materials to counter Hawking's claims and to show evidence for the existence of God from physics. It is not enough to simply produce such material, however. We must deliver it to an audience as wide as Hawking's.

Finally, we are creating high school, college and adult ed curricula that will provide a foundation for faith in God through science and philosophy. The first of these curricula will become available in January 2011. We anticipate these courses will set a new standard for the intellectual, scientific and rational grounding of our faith for the next generation.

Dr. Hawking's book and the fact that it is currently ranked second on provides tangible proof that the need for the Magis Center is absolutely critical. Far too many people will read Hawking's book and never dream of questioning his conclusions. We need your help right now to stop this.

You are our trusted friend, and we do not reach out to you often. Now is the time to take action. Our greatest needs are:

1) Your prayers and commitment to spreading the word. This includes sharing our information with your friends and family using both traditional and non-traditional techniques. We invite you to post links on websites, forums and Facebook. If you have questions about how to do this, please contact Barbara Hallett, our director of communications at

2) Financial support:

  • $75,000 to complete "In the Beginning" (total budget: $440,000. Of this, the Knights of Columbus, Allen and Kathy Lund, and John and Carol Saeman have each generously contributed $100,000)
  • $20,000 to complete the high school curriculum (total budget: $36,000, with $16,000 generously donated by Doug Stephen)
  • $75,000 for new media. (total budget: $100,000) This includes global outreach to youth and adults, in conjunction with our curricula as well as direct outreach to agnostics seeking information about faith and reason.
Your donations, large and small, can help stop the damage done by Stephen Hawking and others devoted to materialism, atheism, and agnosticism.

Thank you so much for your time and prayer.
