careerWHAT IS YOUR CAREER PLAN?

Workforce development professionals are similar to a very good car mechanic that has a car that does not run very well.  They fix everyone else's car, but ignore their own vehicle.  We are always doing career plans for our program participants, but almost no one working in workforce development has a career plan of their own!  What is wrong with this picture?  What is your next move in your career?  If you want some ideas about what could be ahead in your career future click here.

Everyone_is_Working_with_People_in_ReentryYOU MAY NOT BE A REENTRY

EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM BUT YOU ARE

WORKING WITH PEOPLE IN REENTRY!

According to the Department of Labor, one out of four Americans has a criminal record on file somewhere!  This statistic means that no matter what population your program focuses on, you are serving people in reentry whether you know it or not.  People in reentry are a broad group that goes beyond the stereotypes.  That older white collar management level dislocated worker was convicted of embezzlement thirty years ago.  The young computer whiz did time for hacking into their university's database to improve their grades.  The former mayor of a local city was convicted of taking bribes.  Everyone in workforce development needs to know more about serving people in reentry.  Click here to go to an excellent community of practice on this topic.

It is easy to find resume guides for white collar professionals, but guides for blue collar, entry level workers and people getting their first job are hard-to-find.  Yana Parker's books are a gold mine of help for these types of job seekers.  You buy her books used on Amazon for about $6.00.  Click here to find out more.

trends_for_workforce_developementWHAT ARE THE UPCOMING TRENDS IN OUR FIELD?

What is changing about job search, resumes, career counseling, technology and other aspects of our field?  This excellent report from Career Thought Leaders Consortium is packed with helpful state-of-the-art ideas, resources and thought provoking information.  While it does not relate to all types of job seekers, I still think it is a must read for people in workforce development.  Click here for the report.

 WIOAIS YOUR ORGANIZATION FUNDED BY

THE WORKFORCE INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY ACT (WIOA)?

These links will take you to some very helpful information about WIOA.

I have a new training called, Is Your Staff Working in the WIOA Way?  Most of the conversation about WIOA has been about changes at the state, local and WIB level, but what will happen at the staff level?  If your organization is going to be successful with WIOA, you need to make sure the people on the front lines can fulfill the vision of the act.  To get more information click here.

MANAGERS CORNER

Many managers mistakenly think that employee job satisfaction and employee engagement are the same thing.  This is a serious mistake.  As a manager, you need to understand the difference between these two aspects of employment.  You also need ideas to improve in both of these areas.  The most common defining factor in outstanding workforce organizations is the skill, job satisfaction and engagement of their employees.   If you want to learn more on this topic, click here.

latelyWHAT HAS LARRY ROBBIN BEEN UP TO LATELY?

I presented my training, THE RADAR APPROACH TO JOB RETENTION, for the Kansas Department of Children and Families.  I have been working on improving job retention for over twenty-five years and I have trained over 10,000 people in my model that treats retention as both a pre and post employment service.  Contact me here for a description of the training.

Goodwill Industries used my training HOW TO CONDUCT CAREER EXPLORATION WITH THE HARD-TO-EMPLOY!

In my role as the WIOA technical assistance consultant for the city of Oakland, I provided management consulting to Youth Radio to help them start organizing a BUSINESS ADVISORY BOARD.  The Youth Employment Partnership used my consulting services to develop a model for BUSINESS ENGAGEMENT.  The English Center used my consulting services to IMPROVE CUSTOMER SERVICE with their immigrant and refugee clients.  I helped Assets Senior Employment program IMPROVE THEIR PROGRAM DESIGN.

The NAJA conference used my workshop sessions, HOW TO JUMP START THE JOB SEARCH SUCCESS OF THE LONG TERM UNEMPLOYED and HOW TO GO FROM PLACEMENT TO PARTNERSHIP WITH BUSINESSES!

I have been doing consulting sessions with the grantees of REDF.  REDF is one of the leading organizations in the social enterprise field.  I have been providing CUSTOMIZED MANAGEMENT CONSULTATION sessions with the Weingart Center, CEO, Taller San Jose, Community Housing Partnership, Chrysalis, and Coalition for Responsible Community Development.  The topics have included employer engagement, new ways to eliminate barriers to employment and organizing a business advisory board.  We also covered improving job transition outcomes for people in social enterprises, increasing the profits of social enterprises and ways to improve staff satisfaction with their jobs.  See you in the next issue!
