Dear Friends,
I’m so pumped to be back in Las Vegas this year as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer team. The Las Vegas Classic - presented by our great friends at Sanford Health - is special because of the cause and the people involved.
Being a part of this event throughout the years has been a highlight of my career off the court. Watching the Classic grow and provide millions of dollars to fight cancer has been unbelievable. And it’s been an honor to team with Lon Kruger, our fellow coaches and passionate supporters throughout the nation to make the Classic one of the top events of its kind in the nation.

We’re going to have fun in Las Vegas in May - and, more importantly, we are going to save lives. See you there and thank you for being a part of Team Coaches vs. Cancer.

Popular "Hole Hero" program returns in 2022
Program underwrites golf, honors loved ones
|
The popular "Hole Hero" program will return for the 2022 Coaches vs. Cancer Las Vegas Golf Classic presented by Sanford Health and organizers are looking for new supporters.
|
|
The program allows participants to honor a loved one who has passed away from cancer, is being treated for cancer or is a survivor. While helping organizers to offset the golf provided to players during the event, the program allows underwriters to celebrate those in their lives impacted by cancer.
"Hole Hero" sponsorships are $5,000 and will include signage on the course, exposure in e-newsletters and special recognition during the Sunday night event at Park MGM. Underwriters - who are also golfing in the event - will receive an additional free round of golf for four at either Southern Highlands Golf Club, DragonRidge Country Club or Reflection Bay Golf Club in the Las Vegas valley. If you or someone you know is interested in more information about the program or wants to renew from last year, please contact Lon Kruger at lonkruger12@gmail.com or Bridget Byrne at bridget.byrne@xsosofsuccess.com.

Kruger's efforts help OKC Hope Lodge
become a reality
The Oklahoman recently featured a story on retired coach, new facility
|
Those involved with the Coaches vs. Cancer Las Vegas Golf Classic - presented by Sanford Health - are not surprised to see recently retired coach Lon Kruger working harder than ever to support the American Cancer Society. Here’s a short quote from a recent story in The Oklahoman:
“The former OU men’s basketball coach has been retired for almost a year. But on Wednesday afternoon as the Chad Richison Hope Lodge celebrated a construction milestone, placing that final beam and topping off a facility that will soon provide free lodging for cancer patients receiving treatment, we saw clearly that Kruger isn’t slowing down.”

This Coaches vs. Cancer Las Vegas Classic coach is the only coach in Division-I history with 400+ wins at two different schools?
A. Kentucky’s John Calipari
B. Recently-retired Roy Williams
C. Recently-retired Tubby Smith
D. Recently-retired Lon Kruger
See answer below.

Overtime with recently retired High Point head coach Tubby Smith
|
Coaching legend Tubby Smith - one of the most active coaches in Coaches vs. Cancer - recently stepped away from his head coaching duties at High Point, his alma mater. Smith, who won an NCAA title in 1998 with Kentucky, also served as head coach at Tulsa, Georgia, Minnesota, Texas Tech and Memphis.

If you didn’t coach basketball, what would you be doing for a living?
Oh boy… I’d be coaching football (laughing).
Three words your wife Donna would use to describe you?
Too talkative. She’s always saying, “Cut, you’re talking too much.” That’s probably it.
Outside of family and basketball, what would you consider a great passion in your life?
I would think my faith. That’s been the key to my survival.
Your favorite athlete growing up?
Oscar Robertson. “The Big O.” My real name is Orlando so I kind of used that term - “The Big O.”

|
What is some of the best life advice you’ve ever received that you’d like to share with others?
I think my dad taught me… the great John Wooden used the term “balance” but my dad’s whole thing was “moderation.” Don’t go to one extreme or the other. He’d say, “Son, I’ll tell you not to smoke but you’re probably going to try it but don’t make it a habit. I can tell you not to drink but you’re probably going to try it but don’t become an alcoholic. You’re going to speed but don’t kill anybody speeding.” Don’t get too high when you win and don’t get too low when you lose. You’ve got to have moderation and balance in your life.
Listen to more of Coach Smith’s conversation with Lon Kruger and the Xs & Os of Success’ D.J. Allen here. Kruger and Allen host Coaches vs. Cancer’s monthly podcast “Coached Up” talking basketball, leadership, life and the fight against cancer with some of the top names in the sport.
