December 2021 l Issue No. 2
Dear Friends,

We’ve heard so many terrific things about the Coaches vs. Cancer Las Vegas Golf Classic presented by Sanford Health, and we can’t wait to experience it for the first time in May. We’ll be there with you to fight against cancer. Thank you for being a part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Team. Together, we are going to win.

Enjoy the rest of the season, and we’ll see you in Vegas.

Kermit Davis
Ole Miss, Head Coach
Davis’ annual Make Kermit Pay is one of the most interactive Coaches vs. Cancer fundraising events each season. See here how Ole Miss fans helped Davis personally donate over $10,000 to Coaches vs. Cancer in October.

LV Golf Classic memories:
Top of the World's Scott Shuler
In 2014, Top of the World’s Scott Shuler and Pete Wilson stepped up as the first participants in the Las Vegas Golf Classic’s new sponsorship program. Five years later, the support became more personal than they ever expected.

In Scott’s Words
In August 2019, I received a phone call from my wife, Kathleen. We were headed to Pete and Shelly Wilson’s for dinner that evening. Kathleen shared that Shelly had breast cancer, and Pete had spent the last 18 hours working on a plan of treatment and still had questions.
-We got to dinner and asked if there was anything we could do. Pete replied that we just pray for them.
-I asked, “Can I make one phone call?”
-Pete: “To whom?”
-Me: “Coach Kruger”
-I connected with Coach Kruger. Coach said he would call back in a couple hours.
-Coach called and said, “Call this number.” (They had an appointment with the top doctor in Boston three days later.)
-Shelly (pictured with Pete) is cancer free.

Top of the World is the leading collegiate headwear supplier in the nation and will once again donate the Coaches vs. Cancer hats for the 2022 Las Vegas Golf Classic.

C. UNLV’s Kevin Kruger (wife, Allison)
D. Oregon’s Dana Altman (wife, Reva)

See answer below.
Overtime with Oregon head coach Dana Altman
What is the first concert you ever attended?
Bachman-Turner Overdrive. I was a junior in high school.

Favorite athlete growing up?
Bart Starr. I loved the Green Bay Packers. When I was a kid I thought Bart Starr was the greatest.

What’s the best life advice you’ve ever received?
Work hard and good things will happen. The second part of that is you just don’t know when. Players want everything to happen really quick. I think that’s true for all of us.

Listen to more of Coach Altman’s conversation with Lon Kruger and the Xs & Os of Success’ D.J. Allen here. Kruger and Allen host Coaches vs. Cancer’s monthly podcast “Coached Up” talking basketball, leadership, life and the fight against cancer with some of the top names in the sport.

Answer: Iowa’s Fran and Margaret McCaffery are one of the most active couples in Coaches vs. Cancer. Margaret serves on the national board of the American Cancer Society. Check out their work here supporting the Russell and Ann Gerdin Iowa City Hope Lodge. ACS Hope Lodges offer cancer patients and their caregivers a free place to stay when their best hope for effective treatment may be in another city.
A special thank you to our sponsors
