American Cancer Society's Coaches vs. Cancer Las Vegas Golf Classic 2021 E-Update
May 2021 l Issue No. 6
Dear CvC Friends,

Our three golf foursomes from Oregon are looking forward to seeing so many of you in Las Vegas this week as we continue the fight against cancer.

The Las Vegas Golf Classic is special because of the people involved with it - starting with Lon Kruger. We’re looking forward to celebrating Lon’s recent retirement as well as the retirement of Roy Williams, who has played such a significant part in the Classic throughout the years. While they are retiring from coaching, they both continue to play a key role on our Coaches vs. Cancer team.

On behalf of all the coaches, thank you for supporting Coaches vs. Cancer. You are saving lives.

Dana Altman
Oregon, Head Coach
It all starts Sunday night at Park MGM!
IMPORTANT NOTE: New hotel for this year's event
It’s time! Sunday night marks the start of the 14th Annual Coaches vs. Cancer Las Vegas Golf Classic, presented by Sanford Health and hosted by MGM Resorts International. All proceeds - anticipated to once again exceed $1 million net - will benefit the American Cancer Society
The event tips off for participants and special guests with a private party at Park MGM’s North Pool on Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. PT for the PARTY WITH A PURPOSE. Sean Farnham (ESPN) and JT The Brick (Mad Dog Sports Radio) will host a short program celebrating Coaches vs. Cancer. Golf then tees off Monday morning.

While you are enjoying your time in Las Vegas, remember to tag MGM Resorts (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) and Park MGM (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) on social media.
A series of logistics emails are being sent to all participants from Samantha Molinero with more details, including transportation information to and from the golf courses on Monday and Tuesday (9 a.m. PT shotgun start on both days at Shadow Creek and Southern Highlands). Please note that the event is being held at Park MGM which is a different property than MGM Grand, where you may have stayed previously.

Dress to the evening event is "Summer Cocktail Casual.” (Summer dresses/slacks/shorts/jeans for women and slacks/shorts/jeans/polos/button up shirts for men.)

Comprehensive Cancer Centers committed to patients, LV Classic
Local partner, a key teammate with Coaches vs. Cancer, American Cancer Society
Comprehensive Cancer Centers’ commitment to the Coaches vs. Cancer Las Vegas Golf Classic and the American Cancer Society is impressive. But its real commitment is to its patients.
“One of the best things about the Classic each year is getting to meet the cancer survivors we honor through our relationship with Comprehensive Cancer Centers,” said Lon Kruger, event founder and chair. “Year after year we are inspired by their stories.”

This year’s “Mission Moment” on Sunday night will spotlight Helen O’Hanlan, a patient of Dr. Rupesh Parikh, medical oncologist and practice president, and Dr. Dan Curtis, radiation oncologist, of Comprehensive Cancer Centers. Helen (pictured) has stage IV Granulosa Cell Tumor of the ovary and has been a cancer patient for 13 years. She’s had 12 surgeries, three chemotherapies and three treatments of CyberKnife radiosurgery.
After three CyberKnife treatments over 18 months, Helen now only has three tumors and they are still shrinking. Her cancer is stable, and her team of doctors are monitoring her closely. She is able to live a healthy life with the peace of mind knowing that if she has a new tumor or if they start to grow again, she now has a treatment option that works. CyberKnife has not only helped Helen but has now helped several women with late stage Granulosa Cell Tumor, and all of this progress has been made right here in Las Vegas.

“All our physicians and staff take great pride in our involvement with Coaches vs. Cancer,” said Jon Bilstein, chief executive officer of Comprehensive. “Events like these have become a special way for us to honor and recognize the inspiring stories of our patients and their families. They are the reason we do what we do - and we must never forget that.”
Comprehensive is a multi-specialty practice offering medical oncology, hematology, radiation oncology, breast surgery, pulmonary medicine, cancer genetic counseling and clinical research to patients in Southern Nevada. The practice has 46 physicians, 16 advanced practice providers and 14 treatment centers and offices throughout Southern Nevada.

Comprehensive prides itself on its extensive research program that brings groundbreaking clinical research trials to the community. The practice, which partners with institutions such as UCLA TRIO-US, The US Oncology Network, USC, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and leading pharmaceutical companies, participates in more than 170 Phase I, II & III clinical research studies each year, and has contributed to the development of more than 100 FDA-approved cancer therapies.
Findlay Auto, Nike look to repeat as gross champs
Competition is fierce as many top teams, golfers return
Both 2020 gross champions are back in 2021 - as are multiple teams that competed for the hardware at last year’s Coaches vs. Cancer Las Vegas Golf Classic presented by Sanford Health. Findlay Automotive (featuring Robby Findlay, JC Price & Stephanie Bernas) will look to repeat this year as will Eric Lautenbach’s Nike team (pictured and including Jamie Snook, Rich Schlachtner & Ben Lindquist), who won last year’s Southern Highlands gross crown.
The OU Sooner Sports Properties team featuring Noble McIntyre (pictured on the left) and Bob Cunningham returns after winning a net crown last year, including a Cunningham hole-in-one.

Scott Shuler’s Top of the World team (including returner Matt MacKay) are always in the hunt for a title and finished second place gross last year at Shadow Creek. Meanwhile, Duane Barnett’s foursome (featuring Aaron Loesch, Johnnie Miller & Brett Doty) returns after a second-place gross finish last August.

Also returning after placing in 2020 is the entire UPS Store team (Tom Englund, Carl DiGennaro, Greg Sak & Jay Ship) as well as top teams representing Kansas State, including Mike Clark, Mark Whitehead, Shon Hansen, John Chandler & Bernie Haney.
Altman, Kruger discuss LV Classic in Coached Up podcast
Listen to unique conversation between top coaches, close friends
Oregon’s Dana Altman joined co-hosts Lon Kruger and D.J. Allen for the May episode of “Coached Up.” Kruger and Altman coached together 35 years ago at Kansas State and have been close friends since. The podcast is available now

Coached Up is a podcast series from Coaches vs. Cancer featuring conversations about basketball, life, leadership and the Coaches vs. Cancer program. The trio also discussed the Las Vegas Golf Classic in the May episode.

Kruger - who recently retired from coaching and serves as the chair of the Coaches vs. Cancer Council - has begun co-hosting the podcast with Allen, a performance and communication coach. Kruger and Allen co-authored the book The Xs & Os of Success: A Playbook for Leaders in Business and Life.

The podcast is available on most platforms, including Apple Podcasts and Google Play.
