"Under $14, but tastes $50"
The newest vintage of Juan Gil's Mourvedre stunner is already on the last call.
This organic beauty is more balanced than ever, thanks to optical sorting and reduced toast of their barrels.

You may recall their El Nido Clio wines, which were among Spain's most sought-after wines every year for over a decade.
(Sorry, we don't have any at the moment)

For your convenience, we include the public's praise below:

- This is not over-the-top, too sweet, or over-oaked due to the Optical Sorting Machines & reduced toast level of their barrels

-

The chalky and rocky limestone soils, poor in nutrients, are ideal to grow the Monastrell varietal, and the vineyards are low yielding, about 1.04 tons/acre. The Gil family uses progressive winemaking techniques including laser optic sorters after grape harvest to ensure the best fruit is selected. While traditionally farmed organically, 2019 marks the first vintage for this, their flagship wine, to be certified as organic.
According to Wine Advocate,
"The Gil family from Jumilla has around 800 hectares of vineyards in the appellation, a figure that is constantly growing. A large part of their vineyards is already certified organic and the rest are in conversion, with the expectation that 100% of them will be certified for the 2022 harvest. They are also involved in a number of projects related to the sustainability of their business: reducing their carbon footprint, producing their own compost and a new vinification facility powered by solar energy and with zero waste. They produce a grand total of three million bottles. More and more, wines are certified organic and basically all their vineyards already are, even if the wines don't have the seal."

Revelation #1: We actually got to taste the 2002 vintage of this wine last week. The wine was mature, smooth, and shockingly far from fading/tired.
I asked, "What are other $13 reds that can cellar 20+ years?"
Revelation #2: I put away an open bottle of this current vintage in our tasting bar and forgot all about it. My team found it a week and a half later and tasted it, thinking I had just opened the bottle, and commented how lovely it was.
I wouldn't believe either story myself, but here we are.
Salud!

2019 Bodegass Juan Gil "Silver Label" Monastrell
Jumilla, Spain
93 Points - Robert Parker's WA:
"The 2019 Juan Gil (silver label) was produced with Monastrell grapes from their own old, non-irrigated vines fermented in stainless steel and matured in French oak barrels for around 12 months. It has 15% alcohol and a pH of 3.67, but somehow the wine does not come through as overripe; they eliminate all the raisins with their new optical sorting machine and that makes very clean wines and has increased the precision. They also reduced the toast of their barrels and that increases the integration of the oak with the fruit. Varietal, juicy, soft and very drinkable." - LG (4/22)
