St. Luke’s-San Lucas Church
201 Washington Ave Chelsea, MA 02150

Join Bishop Gayle Harris and the people of St. Luke’s-San Lucas in Chelsea for Las Posadas, a traditional Advent celebration in which those gathered will trace Mary and Joseph’s traveling search for shelter – a bilingual celebration with processions, prayer of Novenas, music, food and hospitality. As the group celebrates this well-known story from the Christian tradition, it will hold close in heart and mind the serious plight of modern-day refugees struggling to find shelter today.

Registration is not required, but it is encouraged, so we can have an accurate head count!

Faith in Action: Las Fronteras

The retreat's theme, chosen by the Diocesan Youth Council (DYC), is   Our World; Our Future...   and will encourage retreatants to consider God's invitation to us all to join in the divine work of creating a better world.

Led by the DYC, the weekend features small group workshops, indoor and outdoor games, worship to get everyone moving and thinking, lively music, and some much needed time away from the rush of everyday routines in order to pay more attention to the Spirit of God in our lives.

Scholarship support is available, as is bus transportation. Registration closes when capacity is reached, or on February 2. Downloadable flyer available.

Pre-Confirmation Retreats

Pre-Confirmation retreats are a chance for young people of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts to meet other young people discerning their call to Confirmation, or even just the faith journey in general! The retreats do not try to sum up a year’s worth of classes in one overnight, but we do try to give all who come a feeling for how making a commitment to one’s faith can be lived out not only in church, but in the world and in every part of our day. One of our bishops will join us on each retreat.

The retreats are led by the members of the Diocesan Youth Council, 10th-12th graders who see part of their leadership and ministry as welcoming all the youth attending retreats, leading small groups, and giving reflections on their own spiritual journeys. They look forward to getting to know you all!

Pre-Confirmation Retreats are held at the Barbara C. Harris Camp and Conference Center, and there are two weekends ( March 20-21 and April 3-4) to choose from. Look for a registration link in next month's newsletter, or get in touch with the Youth Missioner, the Rev. H. Mark Smith, for more information.
Resources for Youth Ministry

The Youth Ministry Bookshelf

Here in the Office of Youth Ministry, we prioritize constant learning, examination, and growth, not only for the young people we work with, but also for ourselves. One way that we live into this priority is by making time to read and reflect. Here's a sample of the books on our shelves right now, in case you find yourself with some spare time this winter. Check one out from the library for yourself, or use them to start a book club or a conversation at your next youth group meeting!

The Saint Who Would Be Santa Claus

Adam C. English.

Just in time for Christmas, Adam C. English’s book is a historical investigation of St. Nicholas of Myra, the basis for the figure of Santa Claus. English, who by his own account “has been fascinated by the person and legend of Santa Claus for as long as he can remember,” provides context on Nicolas’ world of 3 rd - and 4 th -century Turkey, and traces Nicolas’ life, death, and legacy. For more information, check out the author’s 2012 NPR interview here.

The Dream of God: A Call to Return

 Verna Dozier

This book, in conjunction with Desmond Tutu’s God Has A Dream , both focused on the ways in which God calls us to help build the Kingdom of Heaven in our own world, have been instrumental in our work this year. Dozier writes with startling insight on the relationships between human beings, God, the church, and the world, speaking in particular of the ways that we are essential partners in the realization of God’s dream. We have found both texts particularly helpful in talking about our Middle School, High School, and Pre-Confirmation Retreats, which are built around the theme “Our World, Our Future.”
Short Stories by Jesus: The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi

Amy-Jill Levine

Amy-Jill Levine brings together historical context, deep analysis, and dry humor to dis-orient the reader for whom Jesus’ parables have become familiar, comforting, and predictable. The resulting parables are thought-provoking and a little unsettling, particularly when Levine takes the time to elaborate the ways in which the parables have been taken out of context to enforce anti-Semitic stereotypes. A thoroughly compelling read, Short Stories by Jesus might be particularly helpful for those looking for new ways to talk about the Gospel in the New Year.
