Last Call for Summer Bulbs

Hello Fellow Gardeners,

It's the last call to order from our Summer Bulb and Bare Root Pre-Order. There are 550 different species and cultivars to choose from. After this Sunday night we'll close ordering for both shipping and pick-up. Extra bulbs will be potted up for sale for in-person shopping later in the season, but they'll cost more. And will no longer be available for shipping. So now's your chance! ;-) Have fun browsing and selecting your favourites to create an extra gorgeous summer garden.

In this issue we bring you an article that was just in the E-News on the sinister and intriguing cobra lilies or Arisaema. They’ve been a Phoenix Perennials signature since the beginning of the nursery. Do you have some in your shade garden yet? You should… ;-)

We are pleased to add 78 new plants to our Main Mail Order Catalogue: BC Natives, Rare Perennials propagated from our stock plants, Fuchsia, additional Edible Plants, and a few other last minute treasures. More info below.

These plants are part of our Main Mail Order Catalogue. It now contains nearly 1200 different plants for Canadian gardeners. You can place orders for shipping across Canada – please tell all your friends – as well as pick-up at the nursery.

There are now 2500 different plants available for online ordering between our Main Catalogue and our Pre-Orders. As we move through the spring our pre-orders are and will be closing so please get your orders in ASAP.

We hope you have fun exploring all the possibilities for your personal gardening space for the new season.

See you soon at the nursery or online!

Cheers, Gary and the Phoenicians

Sinister, Intriguing

Cobra Lilies

Fill your shade garden with botanical intrigue and sinister characters

Cobra lilies or Arisaema are members of the Araceae or Arum family. They are related to the houseplant peace lily and to calla lilies (Zantedeschia). Like their relatives, their inflorescence consists of a central, vertical spadix covered in tiny florets which is protected by an enclosing, snake-like spathe. The cobra lilies are primarly native to Asia but we have two species in eastern North America known as jack-in-the-pulpits, the best known being Arisaema triphyllum.

Arisaema are bulbs for the shade garden. Each emerges from dormancy at different points in the spring and early summer with cool, often subtropical-looking foliage and weird, snake-like inflorescences. Flowering tends to last for a month or more, depending on the species, and then plants can produce orange to red fruit clustered on drumstick-like stems which provide interest in late summer, fall and winter.

Arisaema hardiness depends on the species. The yellow-flowered A. flavum is hardy to zone 4. Others will be hardy to zones 5, 6 or 7. In cold climates though, Arisaema can be grown in pots and protected in winter in a frost-free or slightly frosted location.

In all cases Arisaema appreciate an evenly moist but free-draining, chunky soil. In containers this means mixing a garden soil with 30-50% coarse bark. In the garden this means a good garden soil with not too much rich, heavy compost or mixing in chunky bark or some gravel into the planting hole.

Fertilize with a good bulb food with low nitrogen, high phosphorus and moderate
potassium such as our Garden Prop Bulb Food 2-9-6.

At Phoenix Perennials we love our Arisaema and carry 20-30 species every year. They have all arrived. You can acquire them in two ways. They are available now as bare root in our Summer Bulb and Bare Root Pre-Order with ordering closing on Sunday night. Place your order and we'll prepare your Arisaema for pick-up or shipping. They are not available for browsing so you'll need to place an online order. Or the extra bulbs will be potted up and be available for sale later in the season in the nursery.
