We know that many of you are concerned about traveling since the discovery of the coronavirus. I (Vivian) personally had nine Cunard cruises booked. We have had only a few people cancel plans due to the virus. I not only didn’t cancel my cruises, but actually added a cruise so I now have ten for this year.
I have closely watched what is happening on cruise lines and, in particular, how Cunard is handling their reaction to the virus.
We have customers on all three ships including the
Queen Mary 2 world cruise, the
Queen Victoria South America Circumnavigation and the
Queen Elizabeth Australia Asia segments. They are having a great time and we have not heard of a single case of the coronavirus being reported on any of Cunard’s ships.
Cunard was one of the first cruise lines to stop going to Hong Kong and China in January. At the same time they started screening who could get on the ship - no one who recently visited the severely affected countries.
They canceled all the cruises for Asia and refunded passengers money 100% plus gave them a 25% future cruise credit.
They announced
eight new Queen Elizabeth Australia/New Zealand and transpacific cruises at exceptionally low rates. Some of these cruises sold out within 24 hours! I booked the
22-day transpacific from Sydney to San Francisco in a Princess suite for a little more than $100 per day and
I’m looking for a cabin mate to share my suite.
They are taking more precautions onboard and all passengers are reminded of the most successful ways of minimizing the spread, not only of the corona virus, but strains of the flu and colds: wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 30 seconds, cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, wipe down frequently used surfaces and avoid crowds.
I feel comfortable continuing to cruise. I will be taking a supply of masks and sanitizing wipes with me and I’m avoiding areas the government recommends we avoid. I don’t really have to worry about this because I trust Cunard to avoid any ports that are high risk.
My next cruise is the
April 1 25-day QM2 sailing from Cape Town to New York with a six day pre-cruise land trip to Victoria Falls and the Chobe Game Reserve.
I’m looking for a cabin mate to join me on the May 9 22-day transpacific cruise from Sydney to San Francisco (there’s a 25-day option that goes on to Vancouver) on the Queen Elizabeth at a great rate for a Princess suite.
I’m also looking for a cabin mate for the 10-day Alaska cruise on the QE roundtrip Vancouver on June 12. I’ll be staying on the
QE for the 13-day Alaska cruise June 22-July 5 from Vancouver ending with an overnight in San Francisco and then Lori and I are taking the four-day cruise back to Vancouver.
Next, Joe and I will be escorting the
July 31 21-day Queen Mary 2 roundtrip New York cruise to Iceland and Scotland. (
This can be broken into a 14 day cruise from New York to Southhampton and a 7-day Transatlantic Cruise.)
I have three more cruises planned for the fall:
October 9 13-day Norway and the Northern Lights on the QV roundtrip Southampton and staying on the QV for the October 21 14-day Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands, also roundtrip Southampton. I’m then flying to Singapore for a 15-day QE Singapore to Sydney cruise on November 8-23.
Finally, Barry and I will be joining the
QM2 for the holiday Caribbean cruise to wrap up the year.
Of course, I will follow Cunard advice on any changes needed to these plans to stay safe. Cunard always puts safety first. It’s great to have a cruise line that puts safety above profits.
