This Sunday is last day to donate school supplies

Thank you for your amazing support of the school supply project for students at Port Royal Elementary, a Title I school. Carter Hoyt delivered the first load on Tuesday. (see below)

Although your contributions so far have been more than generous, we could still use more of the following requested items:

  • boxes of tissue
  • tabbed notebook dividers
  • zippered pencil pouches
  • Uniforms/changes of clothing (solid navy, blue or white tops; solid khaki or navy bottoms)

PLEASE NOTE: Because of the school supplies drive, the food collection that normally takes place on the first Sunday of the month has been moved to next Sun., Aug. 10.

By special request--

The choir received five-star reviews for last Sunday's version of Leonard Cohen's tune "Hallelujah" with alternative lyrics by Carol Hyde, Sally Domby and Sally Mayse. Many of you have asked for a copy of the words. Please click HERE.

On Zoom Aug. 13: "God and the Bard"

Cecilia Kendall White, a friend of Tom Miller and a Shakespeare specialist who lives in Stratford-Upon-Avon, has offered to present a series exploring current religious and social issues not unlike those found in Shakespeare’s plays. The series will be via Zoom at 10 a.m. on Aug. 13, 20 and 27 and will be hosted by Tom.

Topics include:

  1. Shakespeare’s use of religious imagery in Romeo and Juliet and what it illuminates about views of love, sex and desire within a Christian context.
  2. Sin and salvation in Measure for Measure and the often awkward relationship between the law, morality and religion.
  3. Religious intolerance and human dignity in The Merchant of Venice, focusing on age-old tensions between Christians and Jews.

Participants must have Zoom installed beforehand to access the lectures. Lecture link: https://shorturl.at/hjKaV and Q&A link: https://shorturl.at/CDB9K. No prior knowledge of Shakespeare is needed, and short pieces from each play will be emailed in advance. For more information, contact Tom Miller at this corrected email address: youngtom1969@gmail.com.

Team captain(s) needed

The Annual Walk for Water will take place on Sat., Sept. 13, beginning at 9 a.m. in Live Oak Park in Port Royal. St. Mark's is once again a sponsor of this event which raises funds for Water Mission, a highly-ranked non-profit which works to bring clean and safe drinking water to people in developing countries. More will follow about how to join the St. Mark's team, but right now we are looking for someone to serve as team captain(s). If you are interested in finding out more about what that role would entail, please contact Carter Hoyt at (404) 936-5695.

Hope and Healing --"come and see"

This summer we began holding services on Wednesdays at noon instead of the late afternoon and the response has been excellent. We also changed the focus of the service by offering laying on of hands and anointing to those present. We share Holy Communion in a more intimate way and instead of a sermon, we just have a chat about something related to the struggles we face in this life. As Jesus said, “Come and see!”
