Last Week of Movies at Rialto - Rialto Theatre on Glenwood Closing…Until New Ownership
After more than 30 years operating one of the Triangle’s longest-running, independent movie theaters, Bill Peebles, owner of the Rialto Movie Theatre is ready to retire. The Historic Rialto will be temporarily suspending operations after Sunday, August 28.

Here’s what’s scheduled for the final week of the Rialto under Peebles’ ownership.
On Friday August 19th, Rialto brought in MRS HARRIS GOES TO PARIS, which will play until Tuesday August 23rd with showtimes at 7pm.

On Wednesday, August 24 the documentary FIRE OF LOVE will play at 7pm.

On Thursday, August 25th the documentary SONS OF MEZCAL plays starting at 6:30pm.

The ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW will screen three times on Friday, August 26th. It is appropriate that the last scene in ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW be in the old theatre as it will be Rialto’s last movie for a while. The “Shadow” cast will perform at all shows, 7pm, 10pm and midnight.

On Saturday, August 27, the Rialto will host a laser show which will take considerable time to load-In and setup. The final marquee change will occur on Sunday, August 28 at 1pm.
But don’t panic the Rialto will resume operations in the near future, specializing in art, independent and special events. The particulars will be revealed shortly.

The Rialto, located at 1620 Glenwood Ave. in Five Points Raleigh, is the oldest movie theater in Raleigh and is among the few cinemas that have been in continuous operation since opening in 1942.

It originally opened as The Colony Theatre in 1936. It was inside a building that used to be an A&P grocery store. In 1942, the space was converted to The Colony movie house.

In 1983, the space underwent renovations and became the Rialto Theatre.
The Rialto’s historic building, built in 1935 is not up for sale. It’s owned by Anne Stahel, whose family has owned the building for around a century. But Peebles is selling the rights to Rialto’s management.

Peebles ran the theater for more than 32 years, guiding it through its restoration. He says is time to retire and time for someone else to take the theatre forward. The search for a new owner has been underway. Hopefully we’ll know soon who will be taking over this historically loved movie theater. Website.

TheBeltlineBuzz items are selected by our editors. No one can pay to be featured on TheBeltlineBuzz. That's what advertising is for, and it's always labeled as such. Selling ourselves (literally) would destroy the legitimacy, integrity, and fun of TheBeltlineBuzz. Plus, we'd never earn your trust that way. So we'll never make a dime off your meal at a restaurant nor a penny from the sale of the latest accessory we told you about.

That said, on occasion, we will send out "Dedicated" emails on behalf of sponsors. You'll recognize them from the subject line: " TheBeltlineBuzz Dedicated Email." Yes, these are paid for. And, no, we would never sell our subscriber list to anyone. Not for any amount of money.
