CPATA is a new, state of the art, national regulator (established June 28, 2021) and the only independent public interest regulator and licensing body of patent agents and trademark agents in Canada (a total of roughly 2,500 licensees). CPATA was established by the Government of Canada, by statute enacted in 2018 through the College of Patent Agents and Trademark Agents Act (the Act), to protect the public interest by strengthening the competencies of patent agents and trademark agents, and building confidence in accessible, ethical, and expert intellectual property services in Canada.
The CEO serves and supports CPATA’s Board of Directors in the execution of its responsibilities under the Act and regulations, providing strategic, operational, financial, and administrative oversight to the College. As the chief staff officer, the CEO leads a distributed team of 5 full-time and 2 part-time staff, and fosters a collaborative, supportive, service-oriented culture that is committed to equity, inclusion, and diversity. The CEO works with the Board to develop CPATA’s future strategic plans and priorities and to align organizational resources to achieve them, and ensures that the College’s policies follow applicable legislation, professional ethics, and best business and management practices.
