Could a Slowdown in the Economy
Actually Help Kitsap Right Now?
|
|
2022 is half over. Behind us sits a robust economy. In front, one that might be more tepid.
According to a recent Washington Post article, consumer spending makes up more than two-thirds of the U.S. economy. Recent analyses in the piece by both Barclays and Charles Schwab find that restaurant, travel-related and services spending is starting to weaken.
So at a recent economic development event I asked some Kitsap CEOs this related question: With a potentially slowing economy, what opportunity or challenge do you see in front of your business?

Combating Inflation: What's Behind High
Energy Prices and What to Do About It
|
|
A special report from the U.S. Chamber
In March, year-over-year consumer price increases topped 8.5%, causing the highest inflationary rise in 40 years. One of the biggest drivers has been skyrocketing energy costs, which impact virtually every sector of the economy.
While the war in Ukraine and supply chain impacts from Russian sanctions have exacerbated price pressures, energy prices were already escalating well before the conflict did. Gasoline prices have more than doubled since their pandemic lows and now average $4.21 per gallon nationwide. In the year preceding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, prices had increased by about 40% (over one dollar per gallon). Natural gas and electricity prices are important contributors as well. This can be clearly seen in the Global Energy Institute’s 2021 electricity price map, which registered a record 5.6% increase in electricity prices last year alone — a number that has only gone up in 2022.
What’s behind high energy prices and what can we do about it?

WSDOT: Big Traffic Delays Expected
with Warren Avenue Bridge Work
|
|
Published in the Kitsap Sun, June 23, 2022
Upcoming work on the Warren Avenue Bridge will likely bring lengthy traffic backups and nighttime construction noise to the areas surrounding the bridge.
Resurfacing work on the span is scheduled for three weekends in July, according to the state’s Department of Transportation:
- 8 p.m. Friday, July 8, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 11
- 8 p.m. Friday, July 15, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 18
- 8 p.m. Friday, July 22, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 25
During the work, traffic on the bridge will be reduced to one lane in both directions, and WSDOT is projecting long backups in the area, agency spokesperson Doug Adamson said. Drivers are being asked to travel only if necessary and to avoid discretionary trips or to travel earlier in the day or later in the evening when there are fewer vehicles on the road.
