Grass Carp in Bay of Quinte

Earlier this month, a commercial fisher captured a Grass carp in the Bay of Quinte on Lake Ontario. Thanks to their quick action, and the rapid response from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Fisheries and Oceans Canada was able to collect the fish (source of the image below). It was confirmed to be triploid (sterile, meaning it cannot reproduce).

Grass carp are one of four invasive carp species that pose a serious threat to aquatic ecosystems in the Great Lakes. While these species are not yet established in Canadian waters, early detection remains vital — and your reports play a key role in protecting our waterways.

Learn 'more' about how to identify and report invasive carps.

FOCA on the Road: Stopping the Spread of Invasive Species

This summer, FOCA has been visiting our member communities across Ontario to talk about key issues impacting our lakes and rivers — and invasive species are high on the list.

These introduced species threaten local ecosystems and can seriously impact our quality of life. We all have a role to play in preventing their spread.

Remember: Clean, Drain, Dry your boat and gear before moving to a new waterbody. Learn 'more' about invasive species and how you can help protect our waters.

Source Water Protection

Phase 2 of FOCA's Source Water Protection community planning project is well underway this summer, with great momentum building across our three participating member associations.

These dedicated groups are working to develop and deliver volunteer-led plans focused on protecting vulnerable local water sources and addressing potential risk.

Our pilot associations are applying the Province's Best Practices for Source Water Protection. They are engaging local experts, analyzing existing data, identifying information gaps, and distributing community surveys to assess awareness and local source water needs.

(Pictured above: Last month, FOCA shared project updates directly with property owners at Lake Bernard, sparking important local discussions)

These steps will help inform the development of meaningful, community-specific source water protection plans. Learn 'more' about the importance of source water protection, and what you can do on your own property.

Invasive Phragmites

Know a Phragmites Problem Spot?

Our partners at the Invasive Species Centre are looking for locations where invasive Phragmites is clearly visible—especially areas where it’s blocking or growing around docks—to photograph for the Ontario Phragmites Action program.

If a site comes to mind in your area, please reach out to Lauren Rogers by email: lrogers@invasivespeciescentre.ca

Your local knowledge can help tell the story of this invasive species!

Fire Safety: Obey Fire Bans

While some regions have now lifted fire bans due to recent rain events, other forested parts of the province remain at high alert due to long term dry conditions this season. Always consult your municipality for local fire hazard ratings and obey all fire bans. Learn 'more' and get links to important fire safety resources. Low Water Conditions

Despite some rain over the past few days, much of the 2025 summer season has seen very low precipitation which has caused low water conditions in many lakes.

For example, Otonabee Conservation reported that their region went for seven weeks without rain between June 1st and August 2nd. Track low water conditions through your local municipal website, or click 'more' to consult the Ontario Low Water Program conditions map, source of the image at the side.
