Wine Tip of the Week
La Clape is a named sub-appellation of the Languedoc appellation in Languedoc-Roussillon, located in southern France. Unusually for a Languedoc sub-appellation, the La Clape title covers both red and white wines.
La Clape's much-respected red wines are produced from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre - the local cepages ameliorateurs ('improver' varieties). While Carignan and Cinsault can also be used to a limited extent, they are being gradually phased out from the local vineyards.
The lesser-known white La Clape wines are made from the classic Languedoc white-wine blend, which includes Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Bourboulenc, with smaller amounts of the Rhone Valley varieties Marsanne and Roussanne. The appellation laws even permit the use of Picpoul, the specialty grape of Pinet, half an hour's drive up the coast (see Picpoul de Pinet).
The official La Clape viticultural area covers the villages of Armissan, Fleury-d'Aude, Salles-d'Aude and Vinassan. It also covers vineyards on the eastern fringes of the town Narbonne.
Located less than four miles (10km) from the southern French coast, the sub-appellation has a climate that is definitively Mediterranean, bringing long, hot summers and relatively mild winters. There is a clear marine influence, as a result of the area's coastal location and its proximity to the various etangs (coastal lagoons) that line the southern Languedoc-Roussillon coast. These have become famous for their resident flamingo populations. This is about as far from the Equator as flamingos live (although some spend the summer in the lagoons of Venice in Italy, slightly further north than Narbonne), confirming just how warm the climate is here. Around half of these flamingos remain here even during the winter months.
The soils of La Clape are largely free-draining and sandy, with a presence of mineral-rich clay. There is also a high proportion of grès (sandstone) here, which echoes the soils found in the Gres de Montpellier sub-region just to the north-east.

This Week's W.O.W.! (wine of the week)
'12 Château des Karantes "Bergerie"
Languedoc La Clape AOP, France
About the wine-
This harmonious wine has a cherry red color and concentrated, ripe red fruit aromas. On the palate, flavors of dense mocha and dark chocolate accent the taut flavors of roasted plum, dark olive and cherries, with notes of spice and vanilla. Well balanced and round, this wine is soft and wonderfully fruity, making it friendly and enjoyable now. A blend of 35% Syrah, 35% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre. The wine is aged in stainless steel tanks to preserve the freshness and natural fruit character of the wine. 14% abv.
Professional Reviews-
"Ripe blackberry and boysenberry notes weave together with licorice, dried herb and coffee accents in this full-bodied red. Hints of black olive and bay leaf linger on the finish. Drink now through 2019. 4,000 cases made." Rated 88 pts. Wine Spectator
About the winery-
Château des Karantes is a magnificent vineyard situated in Languedoc-Rousillon. The domaine is in the heart of a small valley located two minutes away from the Mediterranean between the seaside resort towns of Narbonne Plage and St. Pierre sur Mer. The estate offers a beautiful panoramic view of the Mediterranean Sea with the Pyrenee Mountains visible in the distance.
The vineyard is named after the Bishop of Carcassonne, owner of the estate hundreds of years ago.
The estate, nestled in the Mediterranean Garrigue, is made up of 190 hectares, 44 of which are currently planted under vine. The vineyard extends along the limestone, clay and rocky slopes which form the "Massif" or Ridge of La Clape.
The entire vineyard is in the Languedoc - La Clape appellation. The location allows the production of quality wines because of its exceptional South-East/East exposure, its proximity to the sea and its Mediterranean climate.
