Last Day of School Announcement
We have had some challenging times with the pandemic, derecho, as well as additional inclement weather, but our 2020-21 school calendar is coming to a close. This year, the state graciously forgave the dates in the fall when we were unable to have in-person or remote school due to the derecho. This winter we had a few additional weather delays and cancellations. The time we missed for instruction during the winter months needs to be made up at the end of our calendar year. This means we are adjusting the end of the school year calendar to the following date:

June 4 - Last day of school for students and staff, early release for students with afternoon work time for staff

This change is pending no additional weather days this year. We are looking forward to a great spring and end of the school year!
Note From Noreen
When we start our newsletter with the announcement of the last day of school, we all know the end of the school year will be here soon! Since track season is upon us, we can relate to post-spring break being the last leg of a relay. The finish line will be here before we know it. We’ve had quite a year, haven’t we? As we kept progressing through each leg of the race, teams of people helped support and cheer us on.

And, we’re also simultaneously sharing news about CDC guidelines that keep us adapting as we carry through this pandemic journey. We’ve all collectively learned to adjust and manage the guidance in our classrooms and work settings.

As we come into the home stretch of our staff vaccination clinics, I can’t help but cheer with excitement that we orchestrated a historic vaccination rollout in a “sprint” mode. We formally thanked our Health Services and Human Resources staff a few newsletters ago, but I want to thank them again for their extraordinary efforts! The finish line is near!

Enjoy these last few months of the school year,
Noreen

CDC School Guidelines Update

On March 19, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated their guidelines for operating K-12 schools. Students can expect the following changes in their in-person school environment, effective Monday, March 29:
  • For all grade levels, students should remain three feet apart to the extent possible. This is a change from six feet apart. Masks continue to be required at all times.
  • Quarantine for students remains the same—if they are within six feet of a positive person at school, they must quarantine for 14 days UNLESS they were wearing a mask correctly for the entire time of exposure to the positive person.
  • When masks are removed, such as during lunch, students should remain six feet apart to the extent possible.

“While the physical distancing guidelines have changed based on CDC research and our district data, our health protocols with multiple layers of protection are rigorous and will continue to remain in place,” says Sandy Byard, health services facilitator. “We are committed to providing a safe environment for our students and staff.”
ISASP Assessments Are Coming

The Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP) tests are coming up and it is important for your student/students to come rested and ready so we can accurately monitor their learning and assist them in being future ready. These required assessments occur one time a year and provide data that shows student progress and comparison data.

More information on the details of the testing dates and times will be shared out from building principals early next week. Testing will occur by grade level between the dates of April 19-May 14.

Viola Gibson: A Local Leader

When her nephew was denied entry to the Ellis Pool in 1941 because he was Black, Viola Gibson was determined to desegregate the pool.

With other community members, Gibson helped reactivate the Cedar Rapids NAACP branch, and she led the group’s desegregation efforts. Eventually, they were successful and Ellis Pool was open equally to everyone.
