Lettuce transplanted in the greenhouse

Farm Notes:

Growing and harvesting crops this late in the season is always tricky. There is still so much to be done on the farm before winter. We still need to clean up the tomato patch- take down all the trellis', pull out all the wooden stakes, remove all the drip irrigation lines. But before clean up we still need to finish harvesting all the potatoes and sweet potatoes before the ground gets too cold. Then we will move on to harvesting the carrots for storage. And we still need to finish harvesting the last of the late varieties of apples. The incessant rains in the past week have really kept us from progressing on all the field work. With about 2 inches of rain in the last week, the fields are rather wet. And the days without rain tend to begin frosty. Frosty mornings often prevent us from doing very much out in the fields until things warm up around 10AM leading to less field work being accomplished in a day. In short, because of rainy weather and frosty mornings, we are way behind on our needed field work.

But, with all these weather difficulties outside, we are forced to work inside the greenhouses and are now all caught up inside. The greenhouse tomato plants have all been removed (hence the added green tomatoes in the shares). Kale and lettuce have replaced the early season tomatoes in these greenhouses. With some hoped for sunny days this month these plants will grow in the warmth of the greenhouses to ensure plenty of greens to come whether it be greens from the fields or greens from inside.

What's In My Share

Late Fall is here and so are many of our favorite fall vegetables as well as the final weeks of many of our summer favorites. These transition weeks are some of our favorites.

Don't forget to use the swap box! It's not just for trading for your favorite vegetables. If you won't use something in the share, have a busy week and won't be able to cook everything, or just feel overwhelmed leave your extras in the swap box and they'll be donated to one of our many hunger relief partners.
  • Baby Lettuce
  • Carrots
  • Peppers
  • Kohlrabi
  • Onions
  • Celeriac Tops (see below for tips on how to use)
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Potatoes
  • Apples
  • Herbs
  • and more!

This is what we are planning and hoping to harvest this week.  Ultimately Mother Nature has the last word so the actual contents of your share will vary.

How to use Celeriac tops
The celeriac tops are a great seasoning to use in stocks. Just chop and freeze until your ready to use.

The leaves can be dried out to use in soups or to make celery salt. Check out the photo tutorial.
