Late Summer at the Shrine
A good time to visit
Our New Superior General
Outgoing Superior, Sister Barbara Staley (left), MSC, passes the torch so to speak to newly elected Superior General Sister Maria Eliane Azevedo da Silva, MSC. May the Lord bless both of these women as they carry on the work of Mother Cabrini as dedicated Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
MSC New General Council was also elected at the recent Chapter meeting

The new General Council is formed by Sister Gilda Mendoza, Sister Patricia Godoy and Sister Stella Maris Elena, pictured here with the new Superior General. May they all be blessed in their work for the good and future of the Institute.
Thursday evening Masses for Peace

Every Thursday we pray for peace in our city and the world.
We pray for all those who have been murdered this year, whose names are kept in a jar at the Shrine, updated each week. Mass is at 6:00 PM.

Every third Thursday, there are refreshments and fellowship following the Mass. The next third Thursday is August 18.

On August 11, our celebrant will be Fr. Leandro Fossa, pastor of the
Scalabrinian-led Italian parish, Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Melrose Park.
Bishop Scalabrini was a key figure in the life of Mother Cabrini.
First Friday Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Jesus promised many things to those who complete nine First Fridays, including the "Great Promise": I promise you in the excessive mercy of My Heart that My all-powerful love will grant to all those who communicate on the First Friday in nine consecutive months the grace of final penitence; they shall not die in My disgrace nor without receiving their sacraments; My Divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment. (as given to Saint Margaret Mary Alocoque)

Requirements: Attend Mass, receive Communion, go to Confession (generally advised, 8 days before or after)
One should also be devoted to the Sacred Heart and have the intention of making reparations for the sins and indifference of mankind.

FIRST FRIDAY SCHEDULE
Mass - 12:00 PM
Sacred Heart Chaplet - 12:45 PM
Adoration - 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Divine Mercy Chaplet followed by Benediction - 2:30 PM
FIRST SATURDAY DEVOTION - SCHEDULE
Father James Heyd will be with us all morning for Confessions and Mass, and will give a presentation on Blessed Eurosia Fabris Barban, lovingly known as Beatta Mamma Rosa. Mamma Rosa was a model of faith, motherhood and sacrifice, a future saint we should get to know.

PRESENTION ON ADVANCE PLANNING
CATHOLIC CEMETERIES
SEPTEMBER 10 AND 11

Deacon Glenn Tylutki from Catholic Cemeteries will be at the Shrine for both Masses, 4 PM Saturday and 10 AM Sunday, on the weekend of September 10-11. After Mass, Deacon Glenn will give a presentation on planning for one's final expenses.

"These presentations are meant to reinforce the richness, beauty, joy and peace of the Catholic ritual surrounding death as it is fully celebrated: a Vigil/Wake, Mass in the Parish Church, and the gathering for the Committal Rite at the Catholic Cemetery."

MASS AND TALK BY BISHOP PERRY
SEPTEMBER 25

Bishop Joseph Perry will celebrate our 10 AM Mass on Sunday, September 25. Following the Mass, the Bishop will give a presentation on Venerable August Tolton, who, when canonized, will be another saint, like Mother Cabrini, with a strong connection to Chicago.
Father Tolton's story, like hers, is one of determination to answer God's call in the face of discrimination. Born a slave in Missouri, he was raised Catholic, and after his family was freed, he discerned a call to the priesthood. Rejected by seminaries here, he was ordained in Rome as the first African-American priest for the United States. Hear about and be inspired by his life from Bishop Perry, the diocesan postulator for the Tolton cause.
