We will have a Compassion in Action Offering on Sunday.

Since 2006, SAME Café has been creating community through healthy food access by providing delicious meals in a dignified manner to everyone who walks through the door. SAME Café Denver has no set prices and no set menus. Guests order from a daily selection of mostly local, organic food and then choose to participate in the community in exchange for the meal by: volunteering time, giving produce, or donating money. Our philosophy is that everyone, regardless of economic status, deserves the chance to eat healthy food while being treated with dignity. Visit soallmayeat.org for more information.

From Rev. Eric

As we approach our annual spring congregational meeting this Sunday, following the service, I am also well into the last weeks of the class on church governance (or polity) that I teach at Iliff seminary from time to time. It would be easy to take for granted that we are part of a church that is built on the bedrock assumption that only the members of a local church can make decisions about that church, save for the fact that there are so few examples of such a democratic faith in the world. We have no bishops or presbyteries to tell us what to do, what officers to elect, how to spend our money, or what ministers ought to be sent to lead. We make those decisions on our own.

The first reading in my class is from a book by Conrad Wright, and he opens the book this way –

“Congregational polity is so much taken for granted by Unitarian Universalists that they tend to overlook its importance, particularly its importance as one of the key elements in the consensus that holds the denomination together. When Unitarian Universalists identify the set of values they hold in common, they resort to high-level abstractions like freedom, reason, and tolerance. Yet the meaning of freedom and tolerance is revealed more clearly by the way people behave than by the generalizations they utter.”

Though I am relatively new to First Universalist, I have spent much time this past year getting to know our history, and if there is anything that is clear from the many twists and turns, it is that we are here today because members of this church kept showing up, again and again, to consider together the things of greatest importance in our church, in our public witness, in our programs, and so much more. This Sunday we’ll be sharing a piece from our history in service, a part that asks us what to do when legacies aren’t all clean and tidy, and then we’ll be building the future by gathering together to elect our officers, approve our budget, and lay the groundwork for the year to come. I hope to see you all, that we might live out the meaning of freedom and faith, together,

Rev. Eric

READERS' THEATER

A Night at the Theater

Saturday, May 20th, 5:30 p.m.

This is no attempt at serious theater, but just a chance for a few folks each month to select a play and to do a bit of reading. The "presentation" is usually without rehearsal, with "casting." Selections made by dinner time. Readers' Theater is one of the longest-standing groups in our congregation, going back some decades.

We meet the third Saturday of the month in the basement in Colvin Commons. Join in the fun with an evening of appetizers, and conversations about plays, movies, music, and books. A potluck dinner follows. After dinner, there is a short play or reading. There is usually a discussion about the themes of the play and what connections might have been made with characters or situations.

This meeting will feature "A Night at the Theater”: Readers’ Theater by all local writers. If you plan on attending Pete Peterson memorial service at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, Readers' Theater will follow. Pete and Mary were long-time RT members, so many of us will be at the service and head to the Theater group directly after.

Touchstone Tuesday Dinner

Tuesday, May 23rd, 5:30 p.m. in the Hospitality Center

The May 23rd Touchstone Tuesday dinner will be hosted by the Committee on Shared Ministry together with the Healthy Congregations Committee. We invite you to come help us celebrate the different ways that people contribute in our congregation and be inspired to learn how you might increase your relationship. Come break bread with us! This is an opportunity for fellowship and information sharing.

The Committee on Shared Ministry is elected by, and reports to the Congregation and is responsible for helping to witness, assess, and support the overall spiritual health and wellbeing of the congregation. CoSM has a commitment to the congregation's vision, mission and ministry above all other agendas. It is a partnership across the church—minister and members. CoSM as it is affectionately known, collaborates with the Healthy Congregation Committee.
