Clayco Requires Vaccination
Clayco Construction is among the first companies in the St. Louis area to require COVID-19 vaccines for employees. The firm has told its workers that they will be returning to offices May 10, and vaccinations will be mandatory, with time off available to get them. "We want to set an example, step out from the shadows and we want other businesses to do the same and feel secure." CEO Bob Clark said.

The construction industry's economic rebound is in danger of coming to a halt if the excessive cost of raw materials doesn't come down. Developers are having sticker shock and getting anxious about starting new projects when material prices keep soaring to record highs.
Since our local unions were last able to meet in person, the Carpenters Regional Council has added 1,177 new members. Those members finally are able to be officially initiated into their local union with the resumption this month of local union meetings (see calendar below for dates). On April 7, Local 32 in St. Louis held a meeting to initiate 55 new members.

Let's Talk COVID-19 Vaccine Part X
As of April 12, 74,066,085 people in the U.S., or 22.6% of the population, are fully vaccinated, with 120,848,490 individuals having at least one dose. What do we know now about vaccine efficacy and safety?
Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine
The "Pfizer" vaccine is 95% effective in preventing the COVID-19 virus with symptoms. This vaccine is for people age 16 and older. It requires two injections given 21 days apart. The second dose can be given up to six weeks after the first dose, if needed.
Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine
Based on evidence from clinical trials, the Moderna vaccine was 94.1% effective at preventing laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 illness in people who received two doses who had no evidence of being previously infected.
Round 2: Today, we followed up our March 18 vaccination event by providing the second dose of the Moderna vaccine to members. This means we have now fully vaccinated more than 1,000 of our carpenter members and their spouses.
