Cathy's Corner: Understanding the Tango of Branding vs. Marketing for Wedding Professionals
Today let's talk about the dance duo that every successful business needs to master - Branding versus Marketing.
Branding: The Fairy Godmother of Your Business
Think of branding as the fairy dust you sprinkle around that makes your business unforgettable. It’s like what Cinderella's fairy godmother did – creating magic that resonates. Branding is about defining "who you are" and, more importantly, how you make your audience feel.
It's not just a logo or a color scheme—those are merely the gateways. At its heart, branding is the emotional connection you build with your clients. It’s the warmth they feel when they hear your business name and the smile they get remembering the magical moments you created for them. It’s how your services make them feel confident, joyous, and at ease during one of the most significant days of their lives. Think of branding as the WHAT and the WHY. It is how you define who you are as a company and consistently telling the world about it through your marketing and customer interactions.
Your brand should whisper sweet nothings like, “You’re in the right hands,” or “This day will be as perfect as you imagined.” Think of branding as your business’s personality. So, if you’re the planner who has a knack for whimsy, your branding should scream “Whimsical weddings are our thing!” much like how a magical melody stays in one’s heart.
Step 1: Discover Your Magic Words
To uncover your brand's essence, start by identifying four words that embody your business. These words should reflect the core qualities and emotions you want your brand to evoke. Are you Elegant, Fun, Innovative, and Detailed? Or maybe you're Caring, Passionate, Creative, and Reliable?
ChatGPT Tip: Engage ChatGPT in a brainstorming session. Describe your business’s values, services, and what makes it unique. After you've given ChatGPT a clear idea of what you do and what is important to you, then ask, "What are four words that could represent my wedding business?" The app can offer suggestions based on your input and help refine your choices. (It's okay if the four words it comes up with are not an exact match. Just tell it which ones you like, and which ones you don't, and ask for a few more suggestions.)
Marketing: The Charming Prince
And then there’s marketing, the charming prince taking your brand’s hand and presenting it to the world. Marketing is all about shouting from the rooftops, "Hey, this is what we do, and why we do it fabulously!" It's like opening the palace doors wide and inviting everyone to your royal ball. Think of marketing as the HOW. It's the actions you take to connect with your clients and get them to buy your products or services.
Why The Fairy Dust Matters
Some might say, “But why invest in all these branding elements?” Well, just like Cinderella's glass slipper, the right branding ensures your perfect fit with your audience. A well-crafted brand identity makes people feel certain ways – joyful, nostalgic, maybe even a bit weepy (in a good way!). It creates an emotional connection that leaves your clients wanting more.
Step 2: Match Words to Visuals and Create Your Branding Kit
Once you have your magic words, it’s time to visualize them.
ChatGPT Tip: After you've settled on the four words that you feel best represent your brand (and confirmed those words to ChatGPT), ask ChatGPT to suggest colors and fonts - do them separately - that evoke the feelings or themes of your chosen words. For example, ask "Based on the information I've already shared with you about my business, what colors could you suggest to match words: Elegant, Fun, Innovative, and Detailed?"
After you settle on the colors, and confirm your choices with ChatGPT, then repeat the same process and ask ChatGPT to suggest fonts that match your words. You will be amazed at what it can come up with to align with your brand’s personality. It's still up to you decide if you like what ChatGPT suggests or not, but sometimes with a little help it can get you further along than if you try to do it all on your own.
Build Your Branding Kit
Now that you have your words and the emotional essence, let’s keep building a branding kit that will guide all your marketing materials, from your website to your business cards:
1. Visual Identity Board: Start with the work you've already done and identify the words you've selected to represent how you want your audience to feel. Include the color palette that reflects your brand's words and the fonts that convey your brand's personality.
2. Logo Design: Ask yourself if your logo works with the brand you are trying to create? You may have to work with a designer to craft a logo that integrates your colors and conveys your brand’s magic.
3. Tagline and Messaging: Develop a compelling tagline that sums up your brand promise. Use ChatGPT to refine your messaging so it resonates emotionally. For best results, make sure you keep the conversation going from before so ChatGPT has the history and information that you've already shared about your business to refer back to. Then ask it to come up with 5 possible taglines that best represent your business based on your words and business values. You can refine or mix and match what it comes up with to decide on a tagline that represents YOUR business.
4. Photographic Style: Go through your photos and curate a collection of images that fit your brand’s look and feel that can be used on your website, marketing materials, or social media.
Creating a robust branding kit equips you with the tools to present a cohesive image across every avenue. With the right fairy dust and a charming prince approach, you’ll have a branding and marketing story that leads to a happily ever after, not just for attracting potential clients, but for your business's enduring success.
