Winter 2021 FAME eNews
From the Chair: Dave Phillips
(FAME Chair; Training Manager, G.W. Lisk)

FAME members and partners,
As I look at the past year and what is to come I can only think of one word, Commencement.

We have just endured the most unprecedented year in our lifetime. A global pandemic that has impacted every aspect of our lives from how we shop to how we interact with each other to how business is conducted. I certainly hope it is coming to an end. As economies begin to open back up and activities return to pre-pandemic levels, I wonder how we will move forward. I don’t think we will resume our previous habits and norms - it will be more of a commencement into new habits and ways of doing things.

FAME is already working on our path forward. We are looking at ways to bring our events like the annual meeting and promoting careers in manufacturing to venues that can support remote and in-person attendance. We have two new co-chairs for our Pipeline and Hiring & Training Committee, which has moved to a virtual meetings format. Please welcome Jeannie Brockmyre (Absolute Precision) and Danielle Phillips (Advanced Atomization Technologies), they bring years of experience to this position and new energy to these committees. They have proposed a “FAME Pipeline Reset” that can serve as a framework for us to commence with new ideas and activities in our new environment.
Stay well.
FAME Welcomes Lynn Freid as new Executive Director of the Finger Lakes WIB as Karen Springmeier Retires

Karen Springmeier retired from the FLWIB effective February 1st, and FAME wishes her all the best in her retirement. Often called the "Mother" of FAME, Karen was with the effort from the very beginning when it was first conceptualized and established - and has been helping to steer the ship ever since. She will be missed!

Pictured above right, Karen (left) is with Lynn Freid (right) at the March 2018 FAME Annual Event where Lynn was the recipient of the FAME STAR Award. The STAR Award recognizes Students, Teachers, and Advanced Manufacturing Relationships in pursuit of FAME’s goal to promote awareness of advanced manufacturing careers in the pipeline. FAME looks forward to more successful years to come with Lynn as the FLWIB Executive Director, an excellent fit for our region.

A full press release on the transition is available here:

FAME Student Scholarship Recipients - Where are they now?

Continuing our series, we'd like to share the update recently received from Caitlyn Six. Caitlyn was FAME's 2017/2018 Student Scholarship winner (pictured at right with Ale' Mendoza of Optimax). Caitlyn was a student in FLCC’s Mechanical Technology program.

Caitlyn writes:
Since graduating from FLCC's Mechanical Technology program, I have been working full time in my field. I was employed as an engineer at Res-Q-Jack, Inc. in Elmira, NY for about a year following my graduation. I digitized and organized existing engineering documents, aided in product development, and developed instructional materials for product production and use while working at Res-Q-Jack, Inc.

I then moved to Virginia and started working for Gryphon Technologies, a government contractor. I am currently employed as a CAD Designer at Gryphon Technologies. Though I am no longer a student, my current occupation has provided a lot of learning opportunities and I am grateful for the experience that I am gaining.

I am so thankful to the benefactors of the FAME Student Scholarship; they truly helped me accomplish my career goals.
