Summer 2018 FAME eNews
From the Chair: Dave Phillips
(FAME Chair; Training Manager, GW Lisk)

What a great summer it’s been, before we know it students will be back in school and we will be wondering where the time has gone.

The July jobs report is out with more news about job creation, and unemployment remains at an 18 year low with predictions that it will continue to drop. While this is great news and should certainly help our economy grow, it should also be a call to action. With growth we will need more employees, good highly skilled employees. With unemployment as low as it is there will be less and less people out looking for jobs, and if they are looking they may need to be up-skilled to move into many of the high skill positions. The best pipeline for new skilled worker is young people finishing high school or college.

Manufacturing jobs lead the numbers in new job creation, and it appears this trend will continue. With all this growth, we will need to keep our focus on building a skilled workforce. Many schools and colleges are introducing new programs and curriculum to help prepare students for the ever changing jobs in advanced manufacturing. Genesee County Economic Development Center, Finger Lakes STEM, WNY STEM, and FAME are collaborating to work to bridge the gap in skills needed to fill our ever increasing demand for highly skilled staff, and the Fall brings special events and programs designed to help us promote manufacturing careers!

Coming up in October is NYS Manufacturing Month , and the 5 th is Manufacturing Day . Many companies will be hosting plant tours or working with their local schools to help educate people about Advanced Manufacturing. If you are interested in hosting an event you can visit . This website is packed with resources for anyone who may be interested in engaging youth.

Don’t forget, the Finger Lakes WIB is also hosting Finger Lakes Works With Their Hands on October 4 th - this is a great event that gives students the opportunity to see first hand many great careers, and employers a chance to show off their great companies! There is a special FAME pavilion for our members, so please visit their website for more information if you'd like to attend: I'll see you there!

Thank you for your support of FAME,
Dave Phillips, Chair

Regional EdgeFactor EcoSystems Off to a Promising Start!

Work is well underway on the establishment of  EdgeFactor  Ecosystems in the 9 county region!   EdgeFactor  has recently presented in Wayne County, Genesee County and Monroe County, and efforts to link local businesses with their neighboring school districts are in full swing.

Funding is promising for the new effort, and both Monroe 2 BOCES and the Genesee Valley Educational Partnership will be able to process EdgeFactor subscriptions through their Guidance Information Systems Co-Ser  for their component districts – excellent news! Thirty leaders from schools and businesses in the Genesee Valley Region (pictured above right) recently attended an information session at GCEDC.

FAME member Ortho Clinical Diagnostics has signed on as an EdgeFactor for Business member, and is currently pursuing a partnership with the Spencerport Central School District.
Interested in trying to align with a school district to get an effort started? Contact Julie Nickerson at  EdgeFactor , email: , for additional information on meetings coming soon to your area or school districts looking to partner!
