PNC Foundation grant

aids Phase 2

of NCC's M2K

Curriculum

Digitization Project

The PNC Foundation has awarded New Century Careers a $15,000 grant to fund a portion of Phase 2 of its curriculum digitization project launched in 2022. Phase 1 of the digital training platform was a collaboration of NCC, Pittsburgh’s World-Class Industrial Network (WIN) and Rewyndr, and was funded by the Richard King Mellon Foundation.

Standardized, digital procedures for use in the Manufacturing 2000 (M2K) pre-apprenticeship machinist training program were developed. Utilizing this technology and curriculum delivery tool, M2K trainees can reference via a tablet instructor and industry knowledge as they complete their assignments.

PNC Foundation’s funding will allow NCC, Rewyndr and Catalyst Connection in Phase 2 to identify and assist with better usage and adoption of this tool by M2K trainees and instructors, while also looking to collect data to improve program delivery, identify common errors made by trainees, and improve the number of National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS) credentials earned.

NCC recruiting women for training at July 31

EmployHER Pittsburgh Opportunity Fair

To help attract more women to careers in manufacturing, New Century Careers has been collaborating with Dress for Success Pittsburgh and When She Thrives on EmployHER Pittsburgh.

The program is designed to remove barriers (for example, access to childcare and transportation) through engagement events called Opportunity Fairs that bring multiple nonprofit resources and prospective employers to women across Allegheny County.

The next Opportunity Fair is Monday, July 31, from noon-6 pm at Commonwealth Charter Academy, 162 E. Bridge St., Unit 100, Homestead. Light refreshments and lunch will be available.

Childcare will be offered at no cost to participants. Each woman who attends the opportunity fair will be supported by a success partner over a six-month period to help set and achieve their self-defined goals.

The program is free but requires registration.

Featured Trainee of the Month - Katelyn Chirdon

A member of the current Manufacturing 2000 training cohort, Katelyn Chirdon, is 26 and recently married. While living on the North Side, she attended the Sarah Heinz House, a Boys and Girls Club where she participated in the First Lego League.

In High School, Katelyn attended the A.W. Beattie Career Center for her Junior and Senior years where she participated in the first Robotics Tournament with friend and fellow NCC student Peter Barcousky.

The aspect of the NCC training program that Katelyn found most beneficial was the hands-on portion of the class. Having spent countless hours watching machinists make things on YouTube, it was very gratifying to finally get some actual hands-on experience in a machine shop setting, she said.

At the moment, Katelyn is focused on getting a job in a CNC prototype shop to manufacture aerospace

parts but she eventually wants to have her own home workshop with a small mill and lathe for personal use.

Her new position at the job will be as a CNC programmer and operator. Her background in 3D modeling

software gives Katelyn an edge in designing toolpaths, and now, together with the NCC shop experience, the background to push those skills to the max.

Critical Needs Campaign to support NCC trainees

When you support New Century Careers on Tuesday August 1 through the #ONEDAY Critical Needs Alert, you'll help trainees like Jesse, pictured here.

Sponsored by The Pittsburgh Foundation and its affiliate The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County, this online giving event supports nonprofits that serve vulnerable populations in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties.

Every donation to NCC of $25 to $1,000 at pittsburghgives.org from 8 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. on August 1 triggers additional funding from a $500,000 incentive pool provided by The Pittsburgh Foundation, The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County and their donors.

This is YOUR opportunity to help NCC serve more unemployed and underemployed SWPA job seekers through Manufacturing 2000 and increase the value of your contribution.

If you have any questions about the #ONEDAY Critical Needs Campaign, contact Neil Ashbaugh or

412-212-0828. Thank you.

Mark Your Calendar for Tuesday, August 1.  Watch this email for more details soon!
