Innovation in Action: Celebrating DD Awareness Month
Throughout our nation’s history, progress has been driven by innovation, from the printing press and electricity to modern technology and digital communication.
Each new idea has expanded opportunity and changed how people live, learn, and work. Our work at Fairfield DD is also about innovation, finding new ways to remove barriers and open doors so that everyone can contribute their gifts and talents.
Each year, communities across the country observe Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month during March, a time dedicated to recognizing the contributions and potential of individuals with developmental disabilities. Here in Fairfield County, our theme for this year’s observance is “Innovation in Action.”

While innovation sometimes makes us think of major inventions, it often shows up in smaller but powerful ways. We see it when individuals use assistive technology to communicate more effectively, when students use a device to learn and grow, and when innovative supports help someone live more independently.
At Fairfield DD, we are committed to working alongside individuals, families, providers, and community organizations to turn ideas into real outcomes. Innovation becomes meaningful when it leads to greater independence, stronger connections, and more opportunities for people to participate fully in community life.
DD Awareness Month also reminds us that building an inclusive community is a shared responsibility. Across Fairfield County, I see Innovation in Action through the determination of the people we support, the dedication of our staff and providers, and the partnership of local community leaders.
Together, we are creating a community where people can live, work, learn, and play with greater independence and belonging. I am grateful for the many innovators in our community who help move this mission forward every day.
Join us on Wednesday, March 25th for the 16th Annual Celebration of Possibilities, where we will celebrate Innovation in Action and honor people and organizations that have made a significant impact on our community! See more information below.
With appreciation,
David

Speaking Her Way: My’Only Shows the Power of Communication
Forest Rose student My’Only recently visited Bloom-Carroll Elementary, reading to 3rd graders using her AAC device and sign language. She confidently answered questions, shared about her birthday, and taught students phrases like “thank you” and “friend.”
Her visit sparked meaningful conversations about different communication styles and highlighted how tools like AAC devices empower independence. Later, she used her device to order lunch independently showing confidence in both school and the community.

DD Awareness Month Classroom Reading
To celebrate Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, Fairfield DD staff visited local 3rd-grade classrooms as guest readers. In more than 58 classrooms across the county, staff shared a story and talked with students about the different ways people communicate, including how someone might speak when they don’t use their voice, and what it means to be a kind and supportive classmate.
This year’s book, A Day with No Words by Tiffany Hammond, led to great conversations about communication, connection, and inclusion. Staff truly enjoyed the opportunity to share the story and interact with the students, seeing firsthand their curiosity, thoughtfulness, and excitement to learn.
To help the learning continue, Fairfield DD also provided teachers with resources and activities so students could explore these important lessons about understanding, empathy, and inclusion beyond the classroom visit.

Our Director of Services and Supports, David Baum, and Assistant Director, LaTisha Subham, recently trained all three shifts at the Lancaster Police Department on new communication initiatives.
Fairfield DD helps individuals and families across Fairfield County live more independent and meaningful lives. Staff highlighted the Blue Envelope Program, which eases communication and reduces stress during traffic stops by providing key documents like a license, registration, insurance, and emergency contacts. They also discussed Lancaster PD’s Safety Registry, which helps first responders in emergencies, and the new Ohio Keith’s Law, giving people and families more tools to protect and advocate.
Blue envelopes are free and available at any Fairfield DD location.

Building Positivity Wherever They Go
Much of the work that helps students thrive happens behind the scenes. Angie and Julia play a key role, working one-on-one and in small groups to help students reach their goals through Positive Support Plans.
They collaborate with classroom teams, track progress with data, and bring creativity to learning, like leading an ASL Bingo game to build skills and confidence. Their dedication ensures students get consistent support and the tools they need to succeed.
