We celebrated our volunteers on Thursday, May 2nd at Creekside Restaurant & Bar with a Backyard Barbeque to show our appreciation for all the good and meaningful work they do, serving people in our community living with serious illness. During the program portion of this event, our Director of Volunteer Services, Nicole Romasanta, acknowledged and thanked our
‘I Have A Friend’ volunteers, Beloved Bear volunteers, and our Patient Care Services volunteers. Thank you to our volunteers for your kindness, compassion, and presence that you provide!

Meet Bereavement Counselor, Melissa Axell, LMFT
Melissa Axell completed her BA in Elementary Education at the University of Michigan. After spending three years teaching third grade in an under-served community in Waianae, HI, she felt inspired to return to graduate school to pursue a Masters in Counseling Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute. For 7 years now she has spent time working in the Santa Barbara Community supporting children, teens, and young adults providing counseling services, along with leading various support groups, one of which was teaching parenting education classes for families in transition.

She now has been working with Hospice of Santa Barbara for almost 2 years now as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist working with children, teens, adults and families who are faced with the loss of a loved one. Melissa became drawn to working at Hospice of Santa Barbara because she finds the topic of death and dying to be very important to our human experience and the way we live. She deeply enjoys the work at HSB because it allows her to share a space with an individual that is very intimate and moving. “In my own experience, I honor the journey of grief as a sacred and transformational process offering an opportunity to create inner peace, wisdom, and love.”

In her free time, she really enjoys being outside and active whether that is taking a bike ride, swimming and jogging. And on a bright and warm Santa Barbara day, she is most likely to be found at the beach.
