“Across our health system we have developed a Workplace Violence Committee with System Executive oversight and leadership to advance our program,” says Andrew Miller, Director of System Facility Management and Security at Aspirus Health. “We have focused on improving data reporting and analysis, risk evaluation and reduction assessments, and developing an aligned program that ensures the safety of our staff. Additionally, we have partnered to create tools internally and externally to provide education, risk mitigation and violence intervention programs that improve the safety of our staff.”

Sid Sczygelski a CFO to Know

Aspirus Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Sid Sczygelski was honored recently by Becker’s Hospital Review for his efforts leading financial operations for the Aspirus Health system.

In his more than 31 years as our CFO, Sid has been instrumental in driving growth from approximately $50 million to about $2 billion in net revenue from 1992 to 2023.

“It has been a great honor to be a part of the tremendous success Aspirus has experienced over the past three decades,” Sid said. “I’m very proud of my accomplishments and I know that the work my team has done will help set up Aspirus and the communities we serve for even more success.”

Our Wellness Program gets results…

With a goal of creating healthier habits for herself and her spouse, one participant experienced better sleep, less stress and a desire to eat healthier thanks to the Aspirus Wellness Program. She attributes her success to consistency and carving out an established time for self-care. She offers the following advice for others thinking about beginning a wellness journey: “It doesn’t matter how you start; you just have to start.” She adds, “I feel there is value and education in the Aspirus Wellness Program. I do not feel as though I am chasing points for an end goal. Feeling better and healthier is the end goal.”

Crafting Joy for Cancer Patients

Occasionally, the time one spends on a hobby can bring joy to a person during an emotionally challenging time in their life.

The Wisconsin Valley Woodturners, based in Wausau, found a way to do this, collaborating with Aspirus to design and craft wig stands that are donated to patients undergoing treatment for cancer.

The Power is in Your Hands

Learn two steps to save a life with hands-only CPR

Did you know that 70 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in homes? Statistically speaking, if you are called on to give CPR in an emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of someone you love: a spouse, a parent, a child or a friend. Knowing how to perform Hands-Only CPR, which is a simplified version of conventional CPR, can be the difference between life and death.

“Hands-Only CPR has two simple steps: call 911, then push hard and fast in the center of the chest,” says Amy Larson, CCP, EMS Outreach Coordinator with Aspirus MedEvac. “The outcomes we see after a call where a patient had that initial CPR without the delay of waiting for EMS personnel are vastly improved.”

World Environment Day

The focus of World Environment Day 2023 is Beat Plastic Pollution. According to the United Nations:

  • More than 400 million tons of plastic is produced every year worldwide, half of which is designed to be used only once. Of that, less than 10 percent is recycled.

  • An estimated 19-23 million tons ends up in lakes, rivers and seas annually. That is approximately the weight of 2,200 Eiffel Towers all together.

  • Some 11 million tons of plastic waste flow annually into oceans. This may triple by 2040. More than 800 marine and coastal species are affected by this pollution through ingestion, entanglement and other dangers.

  • Microplastics (tiny plastic particles up to 5mm in diameter) find their way into food, water and air. It is estimated each person on the planet consumes more than 50,000 plastic particles per year – and many more if inhalation is considered.
