The first day of fall is this week: Friday, September 22! To get you ready for it, we've compiled some fun fall facts that explain how the world changes in autumn.
1. Autumn used to be "harvest."
Until around 1500, autumn was referred to as "harvest." The full moon closest to the autumn equinox is known as the harvest moon. Before cities were bright, the brightness of the harvest moon at night was essential for farmers harvesting their crops.
2. 'Tis the season of pumpkin spice. Maybe you're a fan, or maybe you hate the flavor of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. Either way, there's pumpkin spiced flavored everything! These
pumpkin spiced flavored items are especially cringeworthy.
3. Fall Daylight Savings Time. We love to "fall back." Come November 6th, daylight savings time ends, giving us an extra hour of sleep. Not everyone observes DST - Arizona and Hawaii are the exceptions to the Daylight-Saving rule.
4. "Leaf peeping" happens. Leaf peeping is the term for fall leaf tourism and is reportedly a $3 billion business in New England, where tons of out-of-state visitors flock to see the beautiful fall foliage. Check out these

Cashless Tolls Coming to Grand Island Bridges
|
The Grand Island tollbooths are going away, but the $1 fee will remain. The conversion of Grand Island's current system to an automatic, cashless system, will be the first to come for upstate New York. The automatic system plans to be operational at the Grand Island bridges by the end of March 2018.
How does it work? Gantries over the road will capture any passing transponders, as well as the license plates of passing vehicles without a transponder. Every 30 days a bill will be sent to registered vehicle owners who do not have a transponder. If you are a Bestpass customer, you will see no interruption or change in billing. All Grand Island Bridge toll will be billed to your account appropriately at the electronic rate.

No Toll on Port Mann and Golden Ears Bridges
|
As of September 1st, tolls were eliminated on the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges, located in British Columbia. The move was met with mixed feelings, but it looks as though commuters who cross the bridge twice each weekday will save about $1,500 a year.
