City Hall and the Community Center will be closed in observance of Memorial Day. The Pool & Tennis Center is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the pool is currently closed for renovation.

Our Cooper City Commission gathered for a regular meeting on May 24, 2022. Within this recap, Commissioner Ryan Shrouder provides a summary of some Commission actions.

This recap focuses on the rejection of an ordinance that could have passed responsibility for the repair of sidewalks to property owners, an approval related to an interlocal agreement that helps pave the way to roadway and drainage improvements along a portion of Stirling Road, an update on the renewal of a facility use agreement with the Cooper City Optimist Club, some details on preliminary discussions with Davie Fire Rescue and the continuing work to improve Cooper City's fire rescue and emergency services, and an update on an ordinance that will allow for leashed dogs in more passive parks.

Raj Verma has taken the lead as utilities director for the City of Cooper City.  

Verma brings significant experience to our City, as a licensed professional engineer and certified general contractor in the State of Florida, with a master’s degree in civil engineering.

Message from FL DOH on FDA Infant Formula Shortage
The Department of Health in Broward County (DOH-Broward) is monitoring the current infant formula shortage and takes this life-threatening issue very seriously.

On May 12, 2022, State Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo sent a letter to U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Robert Califf regarding the formula shortages affecting some of Florida’s most vulnerable populations.

DOH-Broward wants to ensure Floridians are kept up to date on this issue and have the correct information on how to protect your family.

PROTECT YOUR FAMILY
  • Choose an infant formula that is safe. For more information on choosing a safe infant formula, visit the CDC and FDA pages on the topic.
  • Do not make homemade infant formula. Visit the FDA’s page for more information.
  • Do not buy formula online that comes from outside the United States. This formula could be counterfeit, including a fake labels with a wrong use-by-date.
  • Properly prepare and store infant formula. For information on proper preparation and storage, visit the CDC’s page.
  • Properly clean, sanitize, and store infant feeding items. Visit the CDC’s page for more information.
  • Always wash your hands. For information on how and when to wash your hands, visit the CDC’s page.

Cooper City's FY23 Budget in Progress
On Tuesday, May 24, the City Commission received an update from the City’s finance director. As the Fiscal Year 2023 budget moves through the early stages of development, a presentation was provided that focused on budget assumptions and concerns. City Commissioners had the opportunity to provide input and opinions on what should be considered for the next fiscal budget.

Green Advisory Board Presents Sustainability Recommendation
The City’s Green Advisory Board provided the City Commission with its “Someplace Green” sustainability recommendation. Many of the suggested initiatives align with the City’s strategic plan, as we work toward better means of conserving energy and water, reducing waste, and increasing community participation in environmental stewardship.

Water Safety is a Year-round Effort
Earlier this month, the City Commission recognized May as National Water Safety Month and presented a proclamation to David Duda, who has been an aquatics professional in our community for more than 60 years.

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children between the ages of one and four. Living in South Florida, water safety is a year-round effort.


Water safety tips:
  • Swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards.
  • Actively supervise children when around the water.
  • Always swim with a buddy.
  • Learn proper swimming and safety skills.
  • Install and use barriers around home pool or hot tub.
  • If you go boating, wear a life jacket!
Temporary Traffic Change for Cooper City Elementary
Our BSO Cooper City District is implementing, and will adjust, a temporary traffic change during Cooper City Elementary School's drop-off and dismissal times through June 9, 2022.

Drivers can utilize both lanes of the one-way roadways. While the right lane is used for drop-off and pickup, the left lane can be used by all drivers. Those dropping off or picking up children are encouraged to utilize the passing lane to avoid any drop-off and pickup points that do not apply to them.

What If 911 Does Not Answer?

The City of Cooper City is aware of the current issue with Broward County's regional 911 system. In the event a Cooper City resident calls 911 and there is no answer, Cooper City residents can call the BSO Cooper City station directly by dialing 954-435-2000. Cooper City's BSO station is the only BSO district to staff a lobby 24/7, 365 days a year.

Keeping Cooper City Beautiful
Cooper City’s code enforcement inspectors take on the key responsibility of carrying out the directive to enforce the City’s Code of Ordinances. This section provides information on some of the most common code violations, while also providing information that helps keep Cooper City beautiful. For example, it takes all of us to help keep our parks looking as pristine as possible.

While visiting one of our many parks, please remember to always look around and make sure you did not leave any items that should be placed in a trash receptacle.

Sec. 8-9. - Litter in parks.
No person shall throw or deposit litter in any park within the City except in public receptacles and in such a manner that the litter will be prevented from being carried or deposited by the elements upon any part of the park or upon any street or other public place. Where public receptacles are not provided, all such litter shall be carried away from the park by the person responsible for its presence and properly disposed of elsewhere as provided herein. Those regulations set forth herein shall be construed so as to supplement those prohibitions against littering in parks which are contained in Chapter 12 of the City Code.

Cooper City Grant Programs Help with Loss of Income
Cooper City has received funds as a part of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021 to be used to facilitate the community’s recovery from the devastating economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Specifically, the Cooper City Grant Program is intended to support small businesses, nonprofit organizations, and individuals who have experienced loss of income or other negative economic impacts from 2019 to 2020 or from 2020 to 2021. These are one-time grants that do not need to be repaid.

Applications for residential mortgage and rent, residential utilities, nonprofits and small business assistance will be closing soon. Assistance will be provided on a first-come, first-qualified, first-serve basis to eligible applicants with complete applications.

Here's how we have helped, so far:

  • 100 total applications received
  • 41 applications approved for a total of $139,447 in assistance
  • 31 approvals have been for mortgage/rental assistance ($83,382)
  • 6 approvals have been for small business assistance ($55,000)
  • 4 approvals have been for utility assistance ($1,065)

Vulnerable Population Registry

It's hurricane season and the time to register those with special needs in case of a hurricane or other major countywide emergency. Individuals should register if they are at risk due to a disability, frailty, or health issue, regardless of age.

Broward County's Vulnerable Population Registry is a tool used to help evaluate resident needs by community. Do you know someone who should consider registering? Please ask your neighbors and friends if they are aware of anyone who may be considered vulnerable, so we can be sure our community members get the support they need.

Pool Renovation Progress, Plans to Reopen in Late June
The resurfacing of the Community Pool at the Pool and Tennis Center is making progress. This project will bring the pool into compliance with the Florida Building Code and Department of Health's current regulations. The resurfacing is scheduled to be completed by the end of June 2022.

For months, Cooper City residents and our neighbors have provided incredible support to the Ukrainian community by donating items to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Cooper City. Get a Jump Start on Heart Health
BSO Fire Cooper City offers Heartsaver classes monthly for adults to learn more on how to conduct CPR and address foreign body airway obstruction. The next class for the general public is June 15.

Sign up for Convenience with E-Billing

E-billing gives utility customers the opportunity to see their bill 20 days before its due, by sending your bill via e-mail. Cooper City Utility customers can sign up by sending an e-mail to [email protected]. Please include your full name and address in the email.

Customers also have the option of signing up for automatic payments by filling out a direct payment form and e-mailing it to Utility Billing. It’s fast, convenient and avoids a convenience fee.

FLOW services include license and I.D. credentialing services, renew a vehicle registration, and purchase a specialty license plate. They also offer FLHSMV’s critical safety services such as emergency contact information registration and safety campaigns by the Florida Highway Patrol. However, no written or driving tests are given from mobile units.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office has established a registry for people with developmental disorders. This registry is part of a free community service program that will allow our emergency personnel to respond to and serve our community with disabilities better when our help is needed.

  • AT&T continues upgrading its existing copper network in Cooper City neighborhoods to state-of-the-art fiber optic cable that will increase Internet bandwidth for Cooper City residents. County Stormwater Work Underway, Lane Closures
TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Drivers should expect daily lane closures along the westbound lanes of Stirling Road, between University Drive and Pine Island Road. The closures will be due to county repairs to the stormwater drainage system on the north side of Stirling Road.
