Dear Friends,

The JFS RISE team has stayed busy the last few months, supporting over 40 new American families find success and happiness in their Delaware homes.

Jenevive Newman has recently taken on a full-time position as RISE Case Manager and is working tirelessly to help our refugee and emigr é families achieve and maintain self-sufficiency. Her day-to-day responsibilities include:
  • Employment Services including professional skills development, employment searches, assistance with documentation and applications, transportation to job interviews, etc.
  • Financial Literacy & Planning
  • Life Skills Training & Cultural Orientation
  • English Language Lessons & Conversation Groups
  • Health & Wellness Management
  • Volunteer Coordination

On October 22, JFS welcomed the Office of Refugee Resettlement from Washington D.C. for a monitoring visit, during which they evaluated the RISE program and had the opportunity to meet and receive feedback from the clients we serve.

As always, we are grateful for your continued loyal support and advocacy. We could not do this important work without you.

Thank you for making our community stronger!

Federal Refugee Projections for 2020
In September, we were shocked and disappointed by the Administration's decision to lower the number of refugees to be admitted to the United States to 18,000 for the year 2020. This number, lowered from the 2019 number of 30,000, is the lowest number in United States history and comes at the same time that the worldwide refugee population, an estimated 26 million, is the highest number ever recorded.  With yet another reduction, the Administration challenges the core principles of our nation and questions the very fabric of the US as a nation of immigrants.

JFS condemns this decision and will continue to work each day to strengthen and support refugees in their quest for freedom, safety, and security. As always, we are immensely grateful to everyone in our community who continues to help us open doors, hearts, and minds in Delaware. Our work in community building, family healing, and heartfelt advocacy is never done and has never been so vital. Thank you for creating and maintaining a community of peace.
