Message from Mrs. Gioe

Hello MBS Families, This is your first newsletter for the 2018-2019 school year. I want to take this opportunity to update you on the courtyard renovation project. I cannot adequately express my gratitude to our contractor, Fred Matthews. Despite almost 30 days of rain, Fred has ensured “onward” progress all summer. The courtyard will not be completed, but work will continue.  We are anticipating that it will be completed by the second week of school.  While work continues we are considering all facets of the children’s safety. One of the last things that will be completed will be the security fencing.  We will be working with Custom Security to add a communication feature to the bell at the front gate as well as a secure entrance at the Ott Center for Before and After Care. I understand this is not ideal to begin school without the fencing, but it is the price of progress. I also want to extend congratulations to Tammy Joseph. Mrs. Joseph will be assuming the position of Assistant Principal. Her primary duties will be discipline and curriculum and she will support all aspects of school administration. Please join me in welcoming Mrs. Joseph to her new position. We are looking forward to seeing all of our students and teachers soon and cannot wait for another fabulous year. God Bless, Cheri M. Gioe, Principal

Upcoming Events

6th Grade Orientation - August 2  6th grade orientation is scheduled for Thursday, August 2 from 9-11am. This orientation is designed to help students transition into middle school. Students will receive their class schedule, meet their teachers and walk through a shortened class schedule. Students, please bring your school supplies if you purchased them as you will also be setting up lockers. The morning will end with a question/answer session with administration and teachers. This orientation is for students only. Students should be picked up by 11:00am.

Meet and Greet (All Families-All Students) - August 6 Teacher Meet and Greet is scheduled for Monday, August 6 from 3-5pm. This MBS tradition is a great time to visit with friends, find out who your teachers will be and visit with faculty and staff. Class lists will be posted on classroom doors for 3pm. This year the MBS Home and School Association will be serving snowballs.

First Day of School - August 8 The first day of school is August 8. Carpool starts at 7:20am. Parents may park and walk students to assembly in the gym on the first day of school only. Reminder that there are NO BUSES on August 8.

Cafeteria

Breakfast To Go New to MBS this fall – Breakfast to Go! Grab and go breakfast will be available in the Bishop Ott Center for a minimal charge starting at 7am for before care students and at 7:20 for carpool students, ending at 7:45am. Breakfast costs will be charged to your food and nutrition account.  The menu will include items such as, sausage, chicken, and ham biscuits, fresh fruit, French toast sticks, mini pancakes, cereal, yogurt, waffles, milk and juice. Don’t let your children start the day without brainpower, get them a grab and go breakfast at MBS.

Reminders

Summer Reading and Workbooks Just a reminder about the mandatory summer workbook and mandatory summer reading assignment. The Summer Reading lists can be found on the MBS website at www.mbsbr.org .

Uniform Policy The uniform policy is located in our 2018-2019 Parent/Student Handbook which can be accessed on the MBS website under the Parent tab. Please be reminded that shoes must be athletic shoes that are black, navy, white or gray or a combination of those colors (NO PATTERNS). Laces must be the same color as the predominate color of the shoe. Three quarter or high top athletic shoes are not acceptable. A good rule of thumb is, when in doubt ask before you purchase.   The official uniform vendors are Inkas and School Time.

Office of Child Protection

According to policy mandated by the Diocese of Baton Rouge, all school volunteers must complete a mandatory background check and child protection training. If you are planning on volunteering or attending a field trip during the 2018-2019 school year, now is the time to work through the child protection process. Call Mrs. Landry at 225-751-5867 or email [email protected] for assistance.

Health and Safety

Mrs. Frances Avery, our school nurse is available to address our students’ health and safety needs. Mrs. Avery will be in the school office beginning on July 30. She will be available to receive any medicines or answer any questions you might have. Please drop any necessary medicines off to her during the week prior to school beginning. DO NOT send medicine to school with your children on the first day. In addition, children known to have allergies or illnesses that come to school the first day without having visited with Mrs. Avery, may be sent home. With our nurse comes new policies and procedures that have been adopted to protect our students. Full parental cooperation is expected.
