Bi-Annual NEWSED Program Report

Client Spotlight Gloria Padilla, from foreclosure to security

Gloria Padilla is the full time care taker of her 92 year old mother. She has lived in her home on Xavier Street in the Berkeley neighborhood for many years. Gloria came to NEWSED like many individuals do in need of foreclosure counseling. By the time she came to us she had already visited two other groups who advised her that her situation was hopeless and pushed her sell. This wasn't a viable option for Gloria. She wanted to remain in her home and figure out a way to re-modify her loan, rework her budget and provide stability for herself and her mom. As a single woman in her 60s with limited income and major responsibilities, moving wasn't an option. She was determined to find a way to stay put. Fortunately with the help of NEWSED's counselors, together they found a way. By following a financial action plan Gloria stuck to her budget, increased her income and in the end was able to take advantage of a 4.5% HAMP loan modification. In what could have been a story of hardship and another casualty of today's rough economy, Gloria has navigated her way out of turbulent waters. We're just glad we could help. Award Season

Recently Newsed was recognized for it's dynamic programming both locally and nationally. The first award was received at Esperanza’s National Prayer Conference held in Washington DC on June 13th. Mercedes Fuentes, Director of Programs accepted the award from Jody Torres-Lynch, Esperanza’s board chair for the services provided to more than 885 low and moderate families. Including such programs as the pre-purchase one-on-one counseling, foreclosure counseling, financial literacy classes, social loans, down payment assistance and others. The second award was presented to NEWSED CDC by Sheridan School District in Sheridan Colorado as part of the financial literacy and lending circles programs offered to the school's parents. NEWSED CDC initiated a partnership with Sheridan School District in 2017.

Event Re-Cap

This year marked the 31st Anniversary of Cinco de Mayo Festival. It was one of the best year's yet. The weather was PERFECT. The margaritas were flowing, the lowriders were . . . low, the music was hype and the crowds were loving it. Next year's Cinco will take place on May 4th and 5th. Mark those calendars now!

Last month NEWSED held its 6th Annual Breakfast Award Ceremony honoring our very supportive realtor and lender community. These individuals represent our trusted network of professionals that work with our clients to make sure their home buying needs are well taken care of, for that we are very appreciative. This year's awards were given to Bryan Johnson of Fairway Independent Mortgage Corp. and Myrna Baltazar of Georgetown Mortgage.

NEWSED welcomes Office Manager Juanita Herrera

Juanita was born and raised in Denver and joined NEWSED at the end of May. For the last eight years she worked for non-profit organization The Denver Inner City Parish as the Office Manager specifically for their program La Academia. While there she was also responsible for event coordination, fundraising efforts, and assisted the Director of the Summer Day Camp program. She is currently working towards her A.A. in accounting at the Community College of Denver. When completed she will then move on to her B.A and M.A. at Metropolitan State University of Denver.
