Although it feels like I have said this before, 2022 has been a year like no other. Collectively, our world has faced myriad uncertainties: historic inflation, continued ramifications from COVID-19, supply chain challenges, lack of access to raw materials, labor shortages, energy concerns, and the war in Ukraine. Consumer demands for sustainable products and increased visibility into corporate cultures (i.e., ESG reporting) have reached the highest levels.
These issues span the specialty chemicals sector. The coatings industry is clamoring for change, with asset owners and applicators demanding reduced layers of paint, high-efficiency transfer, improved product performance, and ever-higher solids content. The adhesives industry continues to demand lightweighting, environmental friendliness, and a move from mechanical to chemical solutions. In household and consumer products, sustainability is evolving as a driving force influenced by materials of concern such as PFAS, recycling, and the broadening impact of the European Green Deal. These shifts represent both headwinds and tailwinds—and everyone is trying to adapt as quickly as they can.
