ILENE GORDON ON HER JOURNEY TO THE C-SUITE 
In a recent article, Ilene Gordon, CEO of Ingredion, reflected on her journey to the top. Ilene explained how she sought out mentors, volunteered for demanding assignments, took risks and worked hard. Most of all, she said her greatest asset was "never accepting the status quo." JULIE SMOLYANSKY ON THE SIGNIFICANCE OF GUT BACTERIA
Julie Smolyansky, President and CEO of Lifeway Foods, was quoted in a recent article about gut bacteria. Julie noted that research is only now confirming the long-held assumptions that good bacteria leads to good health and longevity. "Right now the science is catching up to the folklore," Julie Smolyansky said. "Our gut is controlling our entire body. We're actually starting to understand we have a second brain in the gut."

Lifeway makes a fermented yogurt-like drink called kefir that contains probiotics-bacteria this is thought to promote good gut health. Julie said her company is rolling out a probiotic in pill form as well. Read more...

STUDIO GANG TRAVELING PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION BRINGS STORAGE AND DISPLAY TOGETHER
Studio Gang Architects ( Jeanne Gang), working with art advocate Project&, has produced a traveling photography exhibition that highlights the stories and photographs of 24 American workers. The show, entitled Working in America, features the work of Pulitzer-Prize winning photographer Lynsey Addario. Working in America is currently on display at Chicago's Harold Washington Library Center, and will run through the end of January. Read more...

JILL SMART ON POST GRADUATION SALARY RANKINGS 
Jill Smart, President of the National Academy of Human Resources, and University of Illinois Trustee, was featured in a Daily Illini article about the top 50 large universities and colleges whose alumni make the most money post graduation. Illinois placed 16th in the nation, with a median annual salary earning of $56,600, according to a ranking by educational information site StartClas. Read more...

COOK COUNTY TO PILOT PROGRAM JOB SEARCH FOR AT-RISK CHICAGOANS
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle was quoted in a Chicago Sun Times article about the announcement of a $1 million pilot program that aims to find jobs for at-risk 16 to 24-year-olds in two violence-plagued Chicago neighborhoods. "Younger participants in the program will be steered into career exploration programs; older participants will be connected to training and certification for jobs in high-growth industries," said Toni Preckwinkle. FEDERAL SIGNAL NAMED WINNER AT 15TH ANNUAL CHICAGO INNOVATION AWARDS
Federal Signal Corporation, a leader in environmental and safety solutions, was named a winner at the 15th annual Chicago Innovation Awards and its CEO Jennifer Sherman, accepted the award. The winners were announced at an event held at Chicago's Harris Theater on Tuesday, October 25, with nearly 1500 business leaders, civic representatives, and supporters of innovation in attendance. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel headlined the evening.

ROSS BARNEY AND SASAKI ARCHITECTS COMPLETE CHICAGO RIVERWALK
Under the stewardship of Mayor Rahm Emanuel's administration and Chicago's Department of Transportation, Sasaki and Ross Barney Architects ( Carol Ross Barney) have completed the final phase of the  Chicago Riverwalk expansion, creating new connections that enrich urban life and diversify activities along the river through the design of six unique 'rooms'.

"The swampy Chicago River gave birth to arguably the greatest city of the 20th Century. In Chicago's formative years, the river was its lifeline, brimming with traffic. Burnham built his 1909 plan on a civic waterway and promenade along the river. We were entrusted with the responsibility of finally completing that vision, transforming what had become a postindustrial leftover into a 21st century urban waterfront," said Carol Ross Barney, FAIA, lead design architect for Ross Barney Architects. DENISE CADE ON HOW AUTHENTICITY LEADS TO TRUST, CONFIDENCE AND RESPECT   
At a conference of the Minority In-House Counsel Association (MIHCA) in downtown Chicago on October 26, Denise Cade, SVP, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of IDEX Corporation, served on a panel with Andy Silvernail, Chairman and CEO of IDEX, and provided insights into the dynamics between a CEO and GC. Denise and Andy discussed how their authenticity has led to a partnership of mutual trust, confidence and respect. MIHCA was established to promote the professional development, networking and career advancement of minority in-house counsel.
CHRISTIE HEFNER ON REMEMBERING LENNY BRUCE
A two-day conference, at Brandeis University on the legacy of Lenny Bruce opened with a keynote address from Christie Hefner '74. The conference marked the formal opening of the Lenny Bruce collection at Brandeis' Archives and Special Collections, which features Lenny Bruce's personal papers and recordings. In the keynote address "Comedy and the Constitution: The Legacy of Lenny Bruce," Christie described the many intersections between her iconic father and the iconic comic. Read more...
