On October 10 at Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit, Mellody Hobson, President of Ariel Investments, joined several executives in a discussion with Fortune senior editor Ellen McGirt about the barriers facing black women in corporate America.

TIPS FROM POWERFUL WOMEN IN BUSINESS ON LEADING THROUGH TURMOIL
Mary Dillon, CEO of Ulta Beauty, was among the top CEOs that tackled the issue of leading through a transformation at Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit. In Mary's response, she noted that in her first month on the job, she started picking up clues that the company needed to reinvent itself internally.

"It was not a great culture in terms of people being heard and listened to," said Mary Dillon. Mary pushed to create a collaborative environment rather than one rife with internal competition. "I won't put up with any of that," she said. "As a woman with that style, it can come off as not decisive enough." Read more...

VICKY KALOGERA ON FIERCE COLLISION OF NEUTRON STARS KNOWN AS A KILONOVA

Vicky Kalogera, Daniel I. Linzer Distinguished University Professor, Dept. of Physics & Astronomy, and Director, CIERA (Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration & Research in Astrophysics) at Northwestern University, was quoted in a New York Times article about the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO)'s detection of a fierce collision of neutron stars for the first time. The collision, known as a kilonova, sent fireworks across the universe.
 
Vicky Kalogera, who was in Utah hiking and getting ready for August's total solar eclipse when she got the alarm, recalled thinking, "Oh my God, this is it! This 50-year-old mystery, the holy grail, is solved." Read more...

SHRADHA AGARWAL ON NARROWING THE HEALTH CARE DISPARITY GAP
Shradha Agarwal, Co-Founder and President, Outcome Health, was highlighted in a Chicago Sun-Times article about how Outcome Health is specifically targeting physician practices in underserved communities on the city's South and West Sides to help narrow the health care disparity gap.

COOK COUNTY PROSECUTORS RELEASE 6 YEARS OF CHARGING DATA
Cook County state's attorney Kim Foxx released a trove of information about her office's handling of felony cases in 2016, along with charging data going back to 2011. The reports break down the more than 30,000 cases brought for prosecution last year, and how they progressed through the system and affected different racial groups.

"When I took office, I made a commitment to dramatically increasing the transparency of the Cook County State's Attorney's Office," Kim Foxx said. "This report represents an important first step in that process." Read more...

Publicis Groupe recently launched Publicis Spine, a technology and data platform that gives its agencies access to a universal ID and a centralized team of engineers, analysts and strategists.

Led by former Starcom Global Brand President Lisa Donohue, Spine is the backbone of Publicis' goal to make business transformation a core service for clients. In her new role, Lisa will oversee 3,500 analysts, engineers and strategists across the group - most of which come from Publicis Media and Publicis.Sapient. Some of those employees will work at a central unit, while others will be embedded on agency teams.

CHICAGO FOUNDATION FOR WOMEN ANNOUNCES BLACK WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP FUND
Chicago Foundation for Women (CFW) (K. Sujata and Alysia Tate) announced the creation of the Willie Taplin Barrow Fund for Black Women's Leadership at the foundation's 32nd Annual Luncheon. The fund will support a series of new initiatives to invest in black women and girls in the Chicago region. It will include leadership development programming and an award for emerging leaders.

"Willie's Warriors will carry on the spirit of the late Rev. Willie Barrow, a fierce civil rights leader who was known as 'The Little Warrior' for her passion for racial justice and social change," CFW President/CEO K. Sujata said. "We are honored and humbled to carry on the Rev. Barrow's remarkable legacy."

TCN MEMBERS SERVE AS PANELISTS AT USNC-UN WOMEN'S ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT EVENT
Maria Wynne, CEO, Leadership Greater Chicago, and Julie Smolyansky, CEO, Lifeway Kefir , participated in The U.S. National Committee for UN Women's "Economic Empowerment: A Vital Investment in Gender Equality" panel discussion on October 11 at Microsoft. The panel focused on the status of women's economic empowerment, both locally and globally, and how investing in women's economic empowerment leads to inclusive economic growth and poverty eradication, in addition to reducing discrimination and exploitation.
