ANA DUTRA ON SWITCHING TO NONPROFIT WORK

In an article about what it's like to transition into nonprofit work, Ana Dutra, President & CEO of The Executives' Club of Chicago, discussed the importance of installing  business discipline at the Executives' Club.  

At one meeting, she shared financial performance, only to see one staffer push away the document. "I said, 'No, put the paper in front of you,'" Ana Dutra recalled. " 'You can't be part of a business and not understand the business model.'"   Read more...

LOYOLA RECEIVES $6 MILLION DONATION TO FUND SCHOLARSHIPS FOR UNDOCUMENTED STUDENTS OF ARRUPE COLLEGE
Loyola ( Jo Ann Rooneyalumnus John G. Schreiber and his wife Kathy made a $6 million donation to Arrupe to provide scholarships for students who attend the college's two-year associate's degree program, and those who graduate from the college and go on to attend Loyola.

The scholarships will be given to a total of 75 students over six years, and will go to undocumented students who don't qualify for financial aid from the government because of their immigration status. Funds will also be given to 15 students who continue from Arrupe to Loyola each year through 2023.

"This new philanthropic support for students in Arrupe College will enable talented students, many of whom are the first in their families to pursue a higher education degree, to reach their fullest potential and become persons for others," Loyola President Jo Ann Rooney said in a press release. UIC NURSING RECEIVES $5M GIFT TO EXPAND SIMULATION LAB
Terri E. Weaver, Dean of the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing, has secured a $5 million gift to renovate and build out a state-of-the-art simulation laboratory on the Chicago campus.  Donor M. Christine Schwartz cited Terri's skillful leadership of, and sound vision for, the college as a top reason for her increasing commitments to UIC Nursing. 

"The new center will be one of the largest and best-equipped simulation training centers among nursing colleges in the United States," said Terri Weaver. Read more...

COMED UNVEILS SOLAR SPOTLIGHT PYRAMID ART INSTALLATION IN BRONZEVILLE
ComEd (Anne Pramaggiore) recently celebrated the unveiling of its new Solar Spotlight Pyramid, a towering artwork created by artist Shala with the help of local high school students and installed in Gallery Guichard's new sculpture garden in Bronzeville. HADLEY INSTITUTE FOR THE BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED TEAMS UP WITH NASA FOR SOLAR ECLIPSE WEBINAR
Julie Tye, President & CEO Hadley Institute for the Blind and Visually Impaired, was interviewed by NBC5 Chicago following the launch of its webinar, "Explore the Solar Eclipse with NASA."  This is the first in a series of webinars with the goal of helping people who are blind or visually impaired learn about the universe. STATE BOARD TO BEGIN MEASURING KINDERGARTEN READINESS
Chicago Tonight featured the Illinois State Board of Education's announcement that it will begin tracking readiness development of  kindergartners through observation. The project stems from a public-private partnership between ISBE and education advocacy organizations like the Ounce of Prevention Fund (D iana Rauner) .  

"It's a way for teachers to learn how to see children, how to observe, what to observe so they can very specifically attune their interactions with children to help them move to the next level," said Diana Rauner.  Read more...

Diane  Offereins, EVP, President Payment Services, Discover Financial Services, joined the public company board of Brighthouse Financial and will Chair the Board's Compensation Committee. Brighthouse Financial is a spin out company from MetLife that went public on August 7, 2017 and is headquartered in Charlotte, N.C.
