CBOE, NORTHERN TRUST AND SANDOR TEAM UP ON NEW FINANCIAL EXCHANGE

With backing from Chicago Board Options Exchange parent CBOE Holdings (Joanne Moffic-Silver (2011)), financial futures guru Richard Sandor announced the creation of the American Financial Exchange, an electronic marketplace where small and mid-sized banks with $1 billion to $50 billion in assets are able to lend and borrow short-term funds. CBOE will host, operate and provide surveillance for the new, self-regulated market while Chicago-based Northern Trust (Susan Levy (2008), Jana Schreuder (2013) and Joyce St. Clair (2010)) acts as a settlement bank for the market. BMO HARRIS BANK FINANCES GE CAPITAL TRANSPORTATION 
BMO Harris Bank (Mary Jo Herseth (2008) and Alex Dousmanis-Curtis (2015)) is about to become the top lender to the U.S. trucking industry. The Canadian parent of Chicago's second-largest bank by deposits has agreed to acquire the transportation finance business of GE Capital, which will end up being more than $8.7 billion in loans and leases when the deal closes late this year. MITRA DUTTA ON HOW UIC NARROWS GENDER GAP AMONG SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY PROFESSORS
Although women are making strides in the bioscience and social science STEM disciplines, men still vastly outnumber women in computer science and engineering. In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Mitra Dutta (2014), Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of Illinois at Chicago, explained how the University of Illinois at Chicago has improved its gender balance of science and engineer professors through a $3.3 million National Science Foundation grant program it won in 2006. Mondelez International ( Dana Anderson (2002)) was featured in a Chicago Tribune article about the company's plan to become a global leader in well-being snacks, with 50 percent of its portfolio in the well-being space by 2020, up from more than a third of total revenue today. Marilynn Preston (1979), Syndicated Columnist & TV producer, Energy Express, wrote an article on Creator.com about the refugee crisis and shared four approaches to developing an inner-strength strategy of your own "to do something as opposed to nothing."

LISA MADIGAN ON WEDDING GIFTS IN "CHARITABLE GESTURES"   Lisa Madigan
It's becoming more common as couples marry older and want to put a personal stamp on their wedding day to ask guests to make a donation instead of a wedding gift. Now a rising trend, the I Do Foundation helps couples assemble online charity registries and has had an 130% increase in users since 2011. Illinois Attorney General, Lisa Madigan (2003) was an early adopter - she and her husband asked guests to donate to Habitat for Humanity when they married in 2003.

PHYLLIS LOCKETT APPOINTED TO FHLBC BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Phyllis Lockett (2004), CEO of LEAP Innovations, has been appointed to the Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago's Board of Directors. She has played an instrumental role in some of the largest initiatives for the City of Chicago, Chicago Public Schools and Chicago Housing Authority, which included the reorganization of the management structure, resident relocation, capital construction, asset management and economic development strategies to support the Chicago Housing Authority's $1.5 billion Plan for Transformation.

The directorship was formally held by Diane Aigotti (2001), Managing Director & CFO of Ryan Specialty Group. Diane's term expires December 31, 2015. Click here for the official press release.
NILA R. LEISEROWITZ APPOINTED TO GENSLER'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Gensler Regional Managing Principal Nila R. Leiserowitz (2013) has been appointed to the firm's Board of Directors. The 10-person board is tasked with policy making and compliance, design innovation and delivery, and members serve rotating two-year terms. Gensler is a global design firm with 46 offices in 19 countries.  

GLORIA SCOBY JOINS BULLETIN GOVERNING BOARD 
The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has announced that Gloria Scoby (1988) will join the Governing Board for her first term. Gloria retired as group publisher of Crain Communications in December, 2013 and currently serves on the boards of the Terra Foundation for American Art and Museum Associates Council at the Palm Springs Art Museum. She has received numerous leadership and professional awards, most recently a lifetime achievement award from the international ALLIANCE of business publications. The Bulletin engages science leaders, policy makers and the interested public on topics of nuclear weapons and disarmament, the changing energy landscape, climate change, and emerging technologies. UNILEVER NAMES GINA BOSWELL GENERAL MANAGER OF UK AND IRELAND  
On September 7, Gina Boswell (2009) was named General Manager for Unilever UK & Ireland. Gina, once named Marketer of the Year by Women's Wear Daily, has spent the past four years overseeing Unilever's Personal Care division from its New York office. She oversaw the launch of Simple, among the best-selling skincare brands in the UK, in America along with hair care brand Clear.

"I am delighted to be taking on this role in one of the most diverse and competitive markets in the world. The UK has a sophisticated consumer base and a dynamic retail environment and I look forward to building on the strong foundations of Unilever UK brands," Gina Boswell said. Unilever will be looking to Boswell to breathe new life into its UK & Ireland business, where growth of late has been stagnant. Read more...

JAN EBERLY NAMED CO-EDITOR OF LEADING POLICY PUBLICATION
Janice C. Eberly (2014), the James R. and Helen D. Russell Professor of Finance and former chief economist for the U.S. Department of Treasury, has been named co-editor of the Brookings Papers on Economic Activity, one of the leading publications on global economic policy.  Janice, who returned to Kellogg in 2013 after serving as the department's assistant secretary for economic policy, will work with academics and policy leaders developing the agenda and research for the Brookings Institution's flagship economic journal. In addition to the appointment, Janice has been named a senior fellow at Brookings, a Washington, D.C. - based think tank renowned for its impeccable research and work as a designer of independent policy.

"It's a tremendous opportunity to work with one of the leading policy institutions at the interface of the academics and policy work," Janice Eberly said of the appointment. "The Brookings Papers bring academic structure and research to relevant policy debates." 

Janice is the first woman to assume the role in the journal's 45-year history. The appointment further illuminates the role of the women in economic policy, said Janice Eberly, citing as examples Janet Yellen, current head of the Federal Reserve, and Christy Romer, former chair of the President's Council of Economic Advisers, among many others.
SUSAN WHITING HONORED BY GIRL SCOUTS
On September 16, the Girls Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana honored Susan Whiting (2011), Chair of the National Women's History Museum, with a "Smart Cookie" award. The award acknowledges exemplary leaders who, through their smarts and achievements, change the rules of the game, and in doing so, make the world a better place. Susan was celebrated for serving as a role model for our next generation of girls and youth.
ANN DRAKE TO JOIN TWO PANELS AT CSCMP CONFERENCE
DSC Logistics CEO Ann Drake (2000) will present two sessions at the Annual Conference of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) September 27-30 in San Diego, California.
 
In the session, Women in the C-Suite: Leadership Lessons from the Top, Ann will join Debbie Lentz, SVP, Chief Supply Chain Officer, Toys "R" Us, Kathy Wengel, VP, Johnson & Johnson Supply Chain, and Laurel L. Junk, Chief Supply Chain and Procurement Officer, Enterprise Shared Services, Kaiser Permanente, to share perspectives on skills required for success in the C-Suite. This session is "powered by AWESOME," the women's leadership initiative founded by Ann in 2013.
 
In the session, If I Knew Then What I Know Now, Ann and leaders from Tranzact Technologies Inc., Hallmark Cards Inc. and the University of San Diego Supply Chain Management Institute will share their stories on the different choices that led them to be successful and on the lessons they've learned. The Women's Bar Association of Illinois is unveiling its inaugural Leadership Institute, an innovative six-program series to help women lawyers develop their leadership skills and strengthen their professional networks. Andrea Kramer and Linda Myers (2012) serve as co-chairs for the WVAI Leadership Institute.  From October 2015 through March 2016, participants in the WBAI Leadership Institute will attend six monthly professional development programs. Each session will feature a speaker or a panel discussion, an intimate roundtable session, and an informal dinner with opportunities for networking.
