Toni moved 18 months ago to the Admiral at the Lake, a continuing care retirement community on Chicago's North Side near the Foster Avenue beach. The community has an active life-long learning program. Toni co-chairs the community's life-long learning committee, which brings educational programs to the building. As a volunteer at Chicago's Oriental Institute, she was able to arrange for an Egyptologist to give a lecture at the Admiral. About 70 people showed up. This fall, an expert will preview a new exhibit at the Oriental Institute on Persepolis, an ancient Iranian city destroyed by Alexander the Great. She will also arrange a three-part program on astronomy. "There's a wealth of possibilities," says Toni Smith. Eventually, she would like to have local colleges and universities give regular courses at the building. She is in talks with one school to bring eight-week classes to the Admiral.

"It adds a whole new layer of activities to the community," she says

THE CONCEPT:  "NextActNow"
In late July, I was introduced to Rob Wallace, who spent 35 years as a producer and senior producer at news magazines ABC News 20/20 and at CBS News 60 Minutes II.  His body of work includes extensive reporting on topics ranging from entertainment and human interest stories to hard-hitting investigative reports. Mr. Wallace's personal standards required that all stories must include first rate reporting and, above all, have redeeming value.  He has garnered almost all major journalism awards, including the George Foster Peabody Award, the Edward R Murrow Award, several Cine Golden Eagle Awards and seven Emmys for National News and Documentaries.  He was the executive producer for Barbara Walters for 25 years when she was an ABC News Anchor, and the creator of 20/20.

A client told him about Shields Meneley Partners, and he was the first company Rob approached with an innovative -- perhaps, even transformative - idea:  a video-profile that that would become part of an executive's presence on LinkedIn and other social media.

We filmed in August.  Our clients and others were fully prepped by Rob and his team.  He and his production crew shot the necessary footage on August 26th and the site is now live: www.nextactnow.com

This is what we believe:  a written resume will always be required in a senior executive search so that "boxes" can be checked on competencies and experience.  But, no matter how well-constructed and designed a typical resume is, it is passive.  It can't capture the essence of a candidate -- her personality, intelligence and presence.  Now imagine a video profile -- professionally written and filmed -- that lets you tell your own story in the most compelling way -- a resume that brings a candidate to life.

I firmly believe that this model will become the norm, and that we are in on the ground floor.  It will allow recruiters and search committees to pre-qualify exceptional candidates faster, more efficiently and with far greater insight.

Rob and his professional team will personally oversee the production of all interviews for "early adopters" so that we collect exceptional candidates to build out the site.  The anticipated fee for preparation, production, and creation of the finished product that individuals can attach to their LinkedIn profile or send out with their written resume will be $10,000 to $20,000.  BUT, the fee for "early adopters"  is only $5,000.

There is some urgency to next steps:  Rob will be in town on November 2-3 and intends to film  between four and six interviews during that time.  We are already committed for Monday the 2nd through 2:00.  If TCN members would like to participate, we need to hear from them immediately since it will be first-come, first-serve on the shooting schedule.  He will return to Chicago as demand requires, and he will also be looking for candidates in New York and Los Angeles.

We urge TCN members to get in on the ground floor of a model that will be the gold standard in executive and board search.
RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY!
A message from Ellen Mitchell, a friend of Lori Andrews':

If you held a senior leadership position (CEO, COO, CFO, CTO, CIO, CAO, CMO, Senior Vice President, Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, Dean, Provost and President, or equivalent) that ended at a time not of your choosing, we are interested in having you complete a survey to help us understand the impact, transition, and outcomes for such senior leaders.  While we know a great deal about how people come to attain senior leadership positions, less is known about what follows, especially if the transition was not one's choice.  The survey is completely anonymous and confidential and will take roughly 15-30 minutes,  depending on the length of your answers. If you are interested, please email Dr. M. Ellen Mitchell at Illinois Institute of Technology at mitchelle@iit.edu who will provide you access to the survey.  If you know of others who might qualify and be willing to or interested to participate, please pass along this notice.  Thank you so much for your support and assistance.
