STUDIO GANG'S AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY IN NEW YORK EXTENSION MOVES FORWARD  
A geologically-inspired addition to the Natural History museum in New York by Studio Gang ( Jeanne Gang) has received unanimous approval from the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission. The new 135,000-square-foot wing's undulating facade and cavernous interior designs are based on rock formations. More than half a million students are expected to use the new exhibition areas, labs and classrooms each year. The extension will sit among the various architectural styles of the 142-year-old museum, replacing three buildings currently in the vicinity. Read more...

CYNTHIA HARDIE ON TESTING AND NEW CLASS OF DRUGS FOR BLADDER CANCER
Cynthia Hardie, Fleishman-Hillard Inc. consultant and volunteer and patient advocate for the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network, was quoted in a Chicago Tribune article about a new class of drugs that retrain the body's immune system to attack cancer cells is bringing hope to people with bladder cancer, a disease for which no new medications have been developed in three decades. CAROL ROSS BARNEY CREATES BOLD NEW DESIGN FOR THE BELMONT BLUE LINE STOP
An article published in the Chicago Sun Times announced Carol Ross Barney's design for a "canopy" that will be part of the project to update the Belmont Blue Line stop. The project is expected to get under way next year and be completed by mid-2018. This is the station's first major renovation since it opened in 1970. Mayor Rahm Emanuel called the design "visionary." Read more...

CONGRESSWOMAN ROBIN KELLY'S 4TH ANNUAL HIRING EVENT DRAWS 300 JOB-SEEKERS  
Congresswoman Robin Kelly's 4th annual job fair featured more than 60 companies and agencies with active job openings. More than 300 job-seekers attended the Hiring Event at South Suburban College on October 14, 2016.

FIRST-EVER STUDY OF CHICAGO-AREA NONPROFIT MERGERS
The Metropolitan Chicago Nonprofit Merger Research Project, a yearlong report released on October 20, was highlighted in a Crain's article this week. The report is the first study of nonprofit mergers in the Chicago area. Research was conducted at Northwestern University's J.L. Kellogg School of Management (Sally Blount). Polk Bros. Foundation (Gillian Darlow and Sandra P. Guthman) and Chicago Foundation for Women (K. Sujata) were the main sponsors of the report. Its findings are based on 100 interviews with executives who participated in 25 completed mergers between 2004 and 2014. Mission Plus Strategy Consulting (Jean Butzen), a Chicago consultancy, commissioned the report. Read more...

Jennifer shared her professional background and how she developed her interest in broadcast journalism. Gail Hasbrouck's daughter, Dawn Hasbrouck, was also featured as a woman in Chicago news media.
 
Carol Ross Barney, President of r-barc, was featured in a Chicago Woman article that highlighted her thoughts about architecture while growing up in the late 60s, starting her own business at a time when many women were not principals at their own offices, and what the discipline of architecture means to her.

SUNNY FISHER TO BE HONORED BY INSTITUTE OF WOMEN TODAY   
Sunny Fischer, President and CEO at United States Artists, Former Executive Director of Richard Driehaus Foundation, will be honored with the Sister Margaret Traxler Award at the Institute of Women Today fall 2016 Gala. The Institute of Women Today is a 42-year-old organization that operates two-50-bed transitional residences: Maria Shelter, for women and their children in Englewood; and Believe, in South Chicago, which offers housing and support for families. IWT also provides services and programs to the Englewood Community through the Vincennes Senior Center. The event is Cocktails and Hors D'oeuvres at the Ignite Glass Studios, 401 N. Armour St.

SOPHIA SHAW RECEIVES 2016 CONSERVATION LEADERSHIP AWARD
Sophia Shaw , former President & CEO, Chicago Botanic Garden, was recognized as the 2016 Conservation Leadership Award Recipient at the Openlands 2016 Annual Luncheon on October 13, 2016, which aims to unite the conservation community around the goal of inviting people to explore the special natural places throughout our urban region. The Luncheon set a new record and raised more than $360,000 to help support Openlands' mission to connect people with nature.

TCN MEMBERS ON OBAMA FOUNDATION INCLUSION COUNCIL      
On October 11, 2016 the Obama Foundation announced the creation of the Obama Foundation Inclusion Council. The mission of the new Council is to ensure that the ongoing work of the Foundation is informed by a diverse set of views and opinions and in line with the values of diversity and inclusion. The Council will bring together a diverse group of Chicagoans who will play a key role in helping to guide and advise the Foundation's strategic goals and ensure a broad range of opinions and experiences are represented as the Foundation's work moves forward. The initial members of the Diversity and Inclusion Council are:

TERRA FOUNDATION FOR AMERICAN ART ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP TO SUPPORT DIGITIZATION OF ARCHIVES' COLLECTIONS
The Chicago-based Terra Foundation for American Art (Elizabeth Glassman) and the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art and announced a long-term partnership to support the digitization of the Archives' collections. The Terra Foundation has made a $4.5 million commitment to the Archives, $4 million of which is a challenge grant to be matched by the Smithsonian, to seed an endowment for ongoing digitization. The remaining $500,000 provides operating support for the current digitization program.
 
"The ongoing partnership between the Archives and the Terra Foundation provides scholars across the globe unparalleled access to one of the great repositories of original source documents related to American art," explained Terra Foundation President & CEO Elizabeth Glassman. "Equally important, though, is that together we are cultivating a rich, meaningful, and sustained cross-cultural dialogue in the increasingly globalized field of art history, and diverse voices with exciting new perspectives are joining that conversation."
