NIJC ED MARY MEG MCCARTHY IN THE WASHINGTON POST
Last week, an article in The Washington Post featured a quote from NIJC Executive Director Mary Meg McCarthy condemning U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's decision to rescind its policy to release pregnant women from immigration detention except in extreme circumstances. As Mary Meg told The Washington Post: "ICE's policymaking tells us all we need to know about the administration's immigration-related goals - inflicting the maximum possible harm on already vulnerable individuals and communities, all in service of an explicitly anti-immigrant agenda." TCN AND CRAIN'S JOINT SURVEY: WORKERS WANT FLEXIBILITY, CHICAGO BOSSES AREN'T SO SURE
Angela Korompilas, President and CEO, American Hotel Register, and Erin Inman, President and CEO, Primera Engineering, were highlighted in a Crain's Chicago Business article about the results from our joint TCN/Crain's survey, which illustrates employees want flexibility at the workplace. In the survey, which measured responses from more than 1,700 Chicago-area employees across a wide range of industries, found that 39 percent of the respondents say either their employer doesn't offer flextime or their company makes it difficult to use. When it came to work-from-home policies, 1 in 4 say they can't work from home and another 20 percent say their company offers the option, but makes exercising it difficult. Read more...
A RISING FORCE IN CHICAGO VENTURE CAPITAL-WOMEN
Several TCN members were featured in a Crain's article about the rising force of Women in Chicago's venture-capital industry, including,  Ellen Carnahan, Maura O'Hara,  Sona Wang and  Donna Williamson.

"Carnahan remains an investor in nine venture-capital funds through her Machrie Enterprises. For her, funds must have female investment professionals. The more you can source from different networks, the better the deal flow you're going to have,' she says. 'It takes seven to 10 years to get a track record. You have to be patient and keep hanging in there.'" Read more...
SHEILA TALTON: APPLE IS SECEDING IN A PENDING HEALTHCARE CIVIL WAR
Sheila Talton, President and CEO of Gray Matter Analytics, wrote an opinion piece in the Washington Examiner about innovators like Apple and Amazon that are entering the healthcare space and how these companies might revolutionize the industry.  "But Apple's news this month, that it is developing its own system of health clinics, should raise a more important question: if our biggest corporations create their own health systems, where does that leave the rest of us?" LINDA SEARL ON SUCCESSFUL LEADERSHIP SUCCESSION
This month's issue of Chicago Architect featured a n interview with Linda Searl . Linda shared that the Searl Lamaster Howe partnership was formed in 2007 after working with Pam Lamaster  and Greg Howe for several years at her firm, previously called Searl and Associates.
 
"After owning a majority of the partnership, I sold my shares and became a consultant in 2015. Today, I work part time in the office on projects and with clients I've had for many years, and I have time to do other things I like outside the office as well."  Read more...
ADVOCATE AURORA HEALTH MERGER COMPLETE
Advocate Health Care and Milwaukee-based Aurora Health Care finalized their merger on April 1 to become Advocate Aurora Health.  The 10th largest health system in the nation, Advocate Aurora Health comprises 27 hospitals, more than 500 care sites, 8,100-plus physicians and an estimated 70,000 team members. 

Gail Hasbrouck  is a member of the Board of Directors of Advocate Health Care and the newly formed Audit Committee of Advocate Aurora Health.  Read more...

Linda Jojo, EVP of Technology and Chief Digital Officer at United Airlines, was quoted in an article about United's ongoing digital strategy focused on enhancing and simplifying the customer experience through its website, mobile apps, and onboard-connectivity offerings.

MARIA WYNNE RINGS NASDAQ STOCK MARKET CLOSING BELL
Leadership Greater Chicago CEO Maria Wynne helped ring the  Nasdaq  Stock Market Closing Bell in NYC last week with fellow board members from  Chicago Innovation . Maria participated alongside other Chicago industry leaders, including Chicago Network member Ana Dutra , President and CEO of The Executives' Club of Chicago This was a celebration of Chicago's rise as a leading hub of innovation. TWELVE NEW EDTECH TOOLS MAKE THE CUT FOR CHICAGO TEACHERS, ACCORDING TO LEADING EDUCATION 
LEAP Innovations (Phyllis Lockett) recently announced the results of their annual edtech evaluation, which helps educators identify solutions best suited for the unique needs and objectives of their students. Technologies that satisfy the nonprofit's rigorous vetting will be invited to hold in-depth conversations with Chicago educators during the fifth annual LEAP Innovations Match Day, a day-long event designed to engage classroom teachers and school administrators in selecting edtech products that support personalized learning.

CYRUSONE INC. ANNOUNCES NEW $3.0 BILLION UNSECURED CREDIT FACILITY
CyrusOne Inc. ("CyrusOne") (Diane Morefield), a premier global data center REIT, recently announced that its operating partnership, CyrusOne LP, has entered into a new senior unsecured credit agreement, increasing the size of its credit facility by $1.0 billion, or 50%, to a total of $3.0 billion. The new agreement also provides for an extension of maturity dates, reductions in the interest rate margins applicable on the revolving credit facility and five-year term loan, and enhanced flexibility in support of the Company's international expansion plans, including the ability to borrow in non-USD currencies.

"This new $3 billion credit facility gives us substantial liquidity at attractive interest rates to fund both domestic and international growth opportunities, positioning us well for the future," said Diane Morefield, EVP & CFO, CyrusOne.  Read more...

GRAHAM FOUNDATION AWARDS OVER $530,000 IN GRANTS TO INDIVIDUALS
The Graham Foundation (
Sarah Herda ) is pleased to announce the award of $534,850 for new grants to individuals around the world to support 74 projects engaging original ideas that advance our understanding of the designed environment. The funded projects include exhibitions, publications, films, new media works, and site-specific installations that promote rigorous scholarship, stimulate experimentation, and foster critical discourse in architecture. The funded projects were selected from over 600 proposals and represent a diverse group of individuals and collectives, totaling 74 projects undertaken by 111 collaborators. The projects are helmed by architects, artists, choreographers, historians, and filmmakers, who hail from around the world, representing cities such as Milan, Italy; Phnom Penh, Cambodia; Tallinn, Estonia; Kampala, Uganda; and Chicago.

Catherine Jacobson, President and CEO of Froedtert Health, spoke during Kenosha Area Business Alliance's annual meeting, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. 

Catherine  offered a cautionary note to the 70 percent of the population today who are without health concerns and incur only 3 percent of the costs, saying it's important for communities that their health care system remains intact.

"Somehow, even as we chase our bits and parts to make our health care system more cost-effective, we've got to make sure that safety net is there," Catherine Jacobson said. "The day you get a diagnosis for cancer, you're going to want that cancer center there. The day you get in a car accident, you're going to want that emergency department there." Read more...
