MELLODY HOBSON: SMASHING STEREOTYPES DRIVES THIS $12 BILLION FUND
In an interview with Bloomberg Markets, Mellody Hobson, President Ariel Investments, LLC, recalled how smashing stereotypes propelled her from intern to President of Ariel Investments, the Chicago-based mutual fund company that manages assets worth of $12 billion. Her early experiences led her to become an advocate for increasing the number of women and minorities in boardrooms.

"Diverse perspectives lead to a better outcome," Mellody Hobson said. "There's so much data, when you look at the math, in terms of the investor returns and the shareholder value that gets created from more diverse boards. You'd say, well, why wouldn't you do that?" Read more...

ELIZABETH CONNELLY: TITLE IX AT 45 - PROGRESS, BUT WORK TO DO 
Elizabeth Connelly, Chair, The Chicago Network, and head of J.P. Morgan Chase's Commercial Bank's Healthcare, Higher Education, and Not-for-Profit Banking, wrote a piece for Chicago Woman about Title IX and the work that still needs to be done.

"The Chicago Network was founded seven years after Title IX was passed, helping us remember our obligation to maintain this legacy for the next generation of women. Title IX created the roadmap for my generation, and we must make sure it continues to guide our work for my daughters and your daughters -- and their daughters and granddaughters -- to ensure that we level the playing field and leverage all talent as we coexist and compete in the global community."

SONA WANG ON CHICAGO BLUES EXPERIENCE

"I have two things on my bucket list. One is cooking lessons in Kyoto and Paris. The second is creating a very large painting. The title will be 'An American Dream.' BLACK ENSEMBLE THEATER AND STEPPENWOLF UNITE TO COMBAT RACISM WITH FREE EVENT
On Monday September 25, Black Ensemble Theater (Jackie Taylor) and Steppenwolf (Anna Shapiro) will come together for a night of programming to explore racism and other forms of oppression through performances and presentations from local theater troupes. The event, "Highlighting Racism," will take place at the Black Ensemble Theater Cultural Center (4450 N. Clark St.) and will be free and open to the public.

"This is a necessary evening of education, understanding and coming together, we must understand the systemic process of racism and oppression-what is it and how can we remove it from our community?" said Jackie Taylor. Read more...

MARIA KIM ON HOW 9/11 CHANGED HER CAREER PATH
Maria Kim, President and CEO of Cara, is among several CEOs that shared how 9/11 changed their career paths in an interview with the Chicago Sun-Times.

Adler Planetarium's ( Michelle Larson) 2017 Celestial Ball: Solar Flare. The Celestial Ball is an annual event hosted by the Women's Board of the Adler Planetarium. This year marked the most successful Celestial Ball to date: approximately 600 guests attended the ball, which raised $1.7 million by evening's end to fund educational programming designed to bring science to the public, whether by encouraging communities to engage in science observation and experiments or by inspiring students to consider and pursue careers in STEM fields. MARYSUE BARRETT ON THE IMPORTANCE OF EQUITY IN CHICAGO'S GROWING TECH INDUSTRY
MarySue Barrett, President of the Metropolitan Planning Council, wrote for Meeting of the Minds on how inequity and segregation are threatening our region's dynamic tech sector. Tech can and should be at the vanguard of equity, just as it is with innovation. CHICAGO FOUNDATION FOR WOMEN RELEASES UPDATE ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN IN THE CHICAGO REGION
Chicago Foundation for Women (K. Sujata and Alysia Tate) released a new report on the status of women and girls in the Chicago region. Based on the available data, Chicago ranks the lowest out of the country's ten largest metropolitan areas on key measures of gender equity, and lags behind cities like Milwaukee, Houston, Boston and Atlanta.

CFW's report, entitled The Report on the Status of Chicago's Women and Girls, provides an update on data originally collected and published by the McKinsey Global Institute in the 2016 Power of Parity report.

"This report paints a clear picture of the challenges that continue to face women in Chicago communities," CFW President/CEO K. Sujata said. "By regularly sharing data on the state of women in our region, we want to engage the public in pushing for greater gains to accelerate our movement towards gender equity." SALLY GRIMES ON TYSON'S GROWTH PLANS
During a September 6th presentation to analysts at the Barclays Global Consumer Staples Conference in Boston, Sally Grimes, President of Prepared Foods at Tyson Foods, discussed Tyson's growth plans in terms of recent and upcoming new product launches. She pointed out that while the overall food and beverage industry has experienced flat growth or losses, Tyson is bucking the trend as demand for its core products is on the rise. Read more...
