National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

September 30, 2022, commemorated the second annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour the lost children and survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service is committed to the important work of learning and unlearning what is required to move towards reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples in Canada. We also celebrate the resilience of indigeneity, including the unique history, languages, cultural practices, and spiritual beliefs of Indigenous peoples and to reaffirm and strengthen bonds within communities.

On September 30, we raised the Every Child Matters Flag at all of our divisions as a restatement of our commitment to truth and reconciliation.

Service Spotlight
National Police and Peace Officer Memorial
On September 25, 2022, we were proud to stand with members from police organizations across the country at the Canadian Police and Peace Officers' Memorial. We also reflected on our own Constable David Nicholson #589, who passed 24 years ago. To many of us, it feels like yesterday.

This year, we also remembered Toronto Police Service Constable Andrew Hong and York Regional Police Service Constable Travis Gillespie who both tragically lost their lives recently.

Our Apologies:

We would like to apologize for the question that appeared in last month's WRPS Express trivia.
The question was meant to draw attention to the serious topic of the fatal four offences, which include impaired driving, distracted driving, speeding and seatbelts, and are a cause of many fatal collisions in Waterloo Region.

Moving forward, we will ensure that items included in the WRPS Express trivia are selected with careful consideration and sensitivity as we seek to engage and inform community members.
